The student has the right to select his/her own defense counsel (counsel may be ap pointed by the court; counsel does not not include a profes sional attorney.) B. The student must receive a 72-hour-written notice prior to the trial of the specific charges against him or her; be informed of the composition of the court and his/her constitutional rights. C. Have at least five character witnesses in his/her behalf. D. Request that the court disqualify person(s) on court showing possible prejudice. E. Request a closed or public trial. F. Plead innocent to any circumstances without fear of being tried for lying relative to the plea if proven guilty. However a student may be held for perjury. The student. Court wishes to become an integral part of the university. It is felt that in order for the court to benefit each student, they must cooperate with the court, and know that it was created to give them a chance to judge themselves and not be judged by any member of the ad ministration, who may not be as sensitive to the lifestyle and roles of students. Officers of the student court which were chosen by SGA or the class presidents represented are: Activities In Mitchell-Lewis Dorm has four children, a daugh- ter-in-law, and two grand children. On August 29, 1978, Hezekiah Cooper, head of Oc cupational Safety and Health Association (OSHA) and Mrs. Rae Williams, Associate Director of Student Personnel —Women, explained the pro cedures for operating the new alarm system which will be installed, once the weather breaks. Mr. Cooper stressed very clearly that it will be to the advantage of the young ladies to help carry out the procedures. Mitchell-Lewis joined in observing “Sickle Cell”' month. Mrs. Karen Mc- Combe, Genetic Counselor at the District Health Depart ment, discussed facts and showed a film about Sickle Cell Anemia and the Sickle Cell Trait. The first house meeting of 1978-79 academic year was held on September 12. Nominations for each position Co-Op Adds Two Agencies The Cooperative Education Program at Elizabeth City State University began the academic year with the addi tion of two new agencies to its growing list. According to Miss Valerie F. Villines, Director, the North Carolina Environmen tal Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of the United States Air Force are providing Cooperative Education job slots this semester. Assigned to the Pratt and Whitney Aircraft Group at East Hartford, Conn., as an industrial engineer, was jimior industrial technology major James McLean, Shan non, N.C., while Charles W. Jones, sophomore Mathe matics major, PoUocksville, N. C. will be working in the EPA office of Air Quality Planning and Standards, at the Research Triangle Park. were presented and the elec tion was held on September 19. The residents decided that the election of new officers would be determined by secret ballot. The new system of voting encouraged more students to get involved. This year the elected officers will try to encourage more residents to attend the house meetings and work with the various committees on plan ned projects.
