November 1978 Student Court Procedures Dramatized ByLOLAYELVERTON At the November 9 meeting of the Elizabeth City State University Stu dent Court the justices familiarized themselves with court procedure in hearing of student cases. After the meeting was called to order and the minutes read, Chief Justice Robert Branch made a statement. He said, “Above all, the Stu dent Court is a serious and integral part of the univer sity. It must be clear to the students and faculty alike that the authority vested in the members of the student court overrides and supercedes any other cam pus club, social or frater nal organization.” To familiarize the court with proper hearing pro ceedings, the court went through a mock trial using an imaginary case of Best Campus Organization vs. John Doe. According to the charge, John Doe, a stu dent, had been accused by the president of Best Cam pus Organization of embezzlement. After reviewing the statements, witnesses and evidence presented by John Lewis, assistant at torney general, and hear ing the testimony of John Doe and his character witnesses as well as statements from the defense attorney, the justices made their recom mendations. They recom mended to the chancellor that John Doe (1) make restitution to Best Campus Organization, (2) be suspended from Best Organization, and (3) be put on one year probation from holding any office in any student affiliated organization on campus. After conducting the hearing, the justices discussed the procedures that they had used. Ques tions regarding the mock hearing were answered by Chief Justice Robert Branch and advisor George Jordon. A discussion followed concerning the purposes of the student court. Branch pointed out that the func tion of the court was to find facts in cases involving ac cusations of students of wrongdoing. He said the court hears both sides of a situation and provides the student a chance for equal representation of a student by his peers. Student Court Mock Trial Those appointed by each class president to sit on the student court are: Warren Hall and Tammie Lamb, sophomore associate justices; Ronnie McNeil and Antonia Henry, junior associate justices; and Holly Moaney and Vanessa Villines, freshman asso ciate justices. Robert Branch is Chief Justice; Paramjot Gill, Attorney General; and John Lewis, Assistant Attorney General. Ossie Miles And Staff Cafeteria Has New Director By HAROLD E. STOKES Ossie Miles, ECSU Director of Food Services, said that he and his cafe teria staff are attempting to show ECSU’s students through improvement of food, as well as a variety, that A.R.A. (Automatic Retail Association) will be around for a while. Ossie Miles was born in Shreveport, Louisiana on April 8, 1947 to a large family of six. Reared and raised on a farm. Miles at the age of 13, decided to move to Los Angeles where he was raised by grand parents. Entering the University of California at Los Angeles in 1966, Miles worked at a number of jobs to help him through school. During his first two years at U.C.L.A., he worked Scrubbing floors as well as serving food. His last two years at U.C.L.A. he was promoted to baker and senior cook. Upon graduation from the University of Califor nia at Los Angeles, Miles worked as manager at a fast food outlet in Los Angeles before becoming involved with A.R.A. After his work with Church’s Fried Chicken, he was employed at the University of South Carolina as assistant director of food services. He held similar jobs at Johnson C. Smith College in Charlotte; Benedit Col lege in Columbia, South Carolina; and Lincoln University in Oxford, Pennsylvania. With this experience Miles was then moved to Elizabeth City. He says he hopes to be here awhile. He says, also, he enjoys the area but mostly the warmth and friendliness of the people. His duties as director of food services include the purchasing of food, becom ing familiar with different food products, and the displaying of food. He says that he has a very capable assistant in Johnny Harvey, whom most Elizabeth City State University students know by his familiar phrase “What’s up stick man?” Harvey plans to attend the management develop ment school in Phila delphia where he will learn the intricacies of manage ment. Harvey notes that the ECSU cafeteria food has improved significantly since A.R.A. has taken over. A few reasons are a company chef who periodically inspects the cooking of the food, qualified personnel and a variety of food.
