English Education Program
Given Merit By State Officials
The English Education
Program of the Department
of Modern Languages was
recently awarded top ratings
by the Visitation Team of the
State Evaluation Committee
on Teacher Education. In its
initial report to the State
Department of Public In
struction, the Team con
cluded its three-day visit by
recommending the highest
possible ratings in both the
categories of Faculty and
Curricula. Although other
academic areas received
singular plaudits, only the
English Education Program
was doubly honored.
Dr. Vestor Mullholland
(author, former college
professor, and most recently
State Department of Public
Instruction official) and Mrs.
Alleluia Draine (chairperson
of a high school English
department), members of the
Visitation Team, singled out
the following areas for par-
ticular praise: the
Readiness Apprenticeship
Program (also recently cited
in a separate study as
“outstanding enough to
become a state model” by a
high ranking Consolidated
University official): the
Reading Methods for
Teachers of
English Language Arts
course; good relationships
with the public schools;
academic and kindred pur
suits by English faculty
(books, articles, speeches,
and campus and community
involvement); outstanding
degree qualifications, sub
ject-matter expertise, and
continuing growth of
departmental faculty; en
thusiastic, creative, and
innovative instruction; and
the strong, friendly,
professional leadership
provided by the departmental
chairperson. Dr. Anne M.
Henderson.
The Coordinator of the
English Education Program,
Dr. Robert E. Thorne, stated
that the Department of
Modern Languages was
“pleased but not greatly
surprised” by the Evaluaticn
uation Committee’s findings.
“We know that we have a
quality program. Positive
feedback over the years from
public school officials,
present and former students,
and others has made the
excellence of out program
clearly established and well
known to us. It is, however,
always an honor to learn of an
independent group visiting
our campus and leaving with
the same conclusion that
many public school ad
ministrators, who have hired
our graduates(many of whom
receive offers before com
pletion of student teaching),
have already discovered.”
