Page 9 CompaYs ' The Vikings, with an overall record of 3-5 will face the Fayetteville State University this Saturday in the Homecoming match. Determined to capture a first win, the Elizabeth City State University Vikings sat in the driver’s seat when Ray Robinson steered his way through Hampton Institute’s defense and returned the opening kickoff 92— yards for a score. This play set up a pattern of costly collisions for the visiting Pirates, while E.C.S.U.’s offense and defense put their sights in high gear and roared to a 28— 8 victory over Hampton September 22. E.C.S.U. produced their best offense of the season, combining for 21 points , while producing 111 total net yards. James Best scored the Viking’s first rushing touch down this season on a five yard run with 3:45 left in the first quarter. Neely’s extra point was good, making the score 15—8. The Pirates only T.D. of the October 1979 Jvenmg was scorea after 12:07 left in the first quarter by halfback Anthony Arm strong, H.I.’s leading rusher. Viking quarterback Ralph Eagleton showed his passing talents by connecting a 25- yard pass with Aaron Casey in the second quarter. Hampton’s offensive ob jectives were obliterated by the Viking defense. Two costly interceptions later in the match by senior defen sive-back Fred Wilson and a fumble recovery by Maryland Bright made Hi’s scoring efforts futile. The momentum of the contest stayed with the Vikings throughout the second quarter. Although they were unable to capitalize on two Pirate turnovers during the period, the defensive tactics of the Vikings was to play key factor in the third quarter. Not to be out-done by the defense on this spectacular day of play, the gallant of- *ense returned to field, running hard and straight at Hi’s defensers. Viking’s back, Gary Sneed trudged through the rain soaked field, to compile a total of 71 yards in six carries for second half. His evening’s total was 89 yard in 24 carries. Quarterback Ralph Eagleton again showed his poise, by hitting, split-end Kelly White in the endzone, from 11 yards out. Neely’s extra point made the score 28- 8. Producing both consistent offensive and defensive maneuvers, the Viking’s simply played the type of ballgame that they are capable of playing. Eagleton was named the Schlitz Offensive Player of the Game. Wilson was the Schlitz Defensive Player of the Game.
