February 1980 Lady Vikings Lose, 67-66 By CHARLES WHITE Daily Advance Sports Writer A foul shot in basketball talk can be described as a free gift, purchased at the expense of the opposing team. This coming week on the Elizabeth City State University campus, people will think wistfully of those “free gifts”, and think of the big one that got away. The“big one” was the CIAA women’s basketball title, removed from the grasp of ECSU by a taller Virginia State squad in the final seconds, 67-66. Missed foul shot op portunities, many in one-and- one situations,were the in struments that keyed the Lady Vikings defeat. It’s just that simple. And then again.it isn’t. In a time when people only seem to remember who won, who lost, and by what margin, alot of points of in terest concerning that women’s game on Saturday will be overlooked. Here are a few to think about. At the beginning of the season, J^SU’s wmen were faced with the trying ex perience of getting used to a new coach and a new style of play. They struggled and lost a number of games before the pieces began to fall into place. When they did, the Lady Vikings became awesome, first sweeping their way into their very first CIAA tour nament, then sweeping their way into the final. The game got out of hand in the early goings and ECSU found itself with a 10-point half time deficit and its back against the wall. Many teams would have folded at that moment. Many teams....but not these Lady Vikings. Badly out-rebounded in the first half, the locals clawed their way back relying on those who had helped them during their regular season. Diana Chavers, Francine Godwin, Deborah Fogle, Mattie Thorne, Grace Bell, Minnie White and Deborah Madison all rose to the oc- (continued on pg. 7) A Winter Snow Scene Death comes to live oak fronting the G.
