ECSU ROTC PROGRAM TO BEGIN WITH SUMMER TERM The U.S. Army Reserve Officers Training Corps will move into full action on the Elizabeth City State University campus with the beginning of the 1981 Summer Term, according to Dr. Floyd Robinson, ECSU Summer School Director. Courses will be offered m Basic Military Science and Leadership Training and Management, accompanied by drill and ceremony training, and will be open to beginning fresh men and upper level students wishing to qualify for the advanced ROTC Program next fall. Plans for advanced and beginning ROTC programs were previously announced to begin with the Fall 1981 semester. “This summer program has been scheduled especially to assist area community college transfer students and rising ECSU junior level students who are unable to attend Basic Camp at Fort Knox, Ky., this summer, and who for one reason or another do not qualify for the advanced program at present,” Dr. Robinson explained. Cadets participating in the summer program will receive uniforms and all necessary equipment, but no stipend. In the fall, advanced nonscholarship cadets will receive a subsistence allowance of $100 per month up to 20 months. Recipients of highly competitive scholarships will receive tuition, books, lab, and other fees, plus the $100 subsistence allowance throughout the two year advanced program. However, advanced cadets must contract with the Army to complete the two-year ROTC program, to accept a commission as a second lieutenant upon graduation, and to accept a three-year assignment with the Army or a Reserve component. Fresh- men and sophomores enrolling in the four-year program will receive no money and are under no obligation to the Army. The ECSU ROTC program will be supervised by Col. George W. Lampkin, Com mander of the Norfolk State University ROTC detachment and a professor of military science, until it becomes independent, producing 15 commissioned officers in 1983 and 1984. A two man staff moved on campus on March 1, 1981, where current applicants will be screened and recruiting efforts on campus and throughout the area will be accelerated. Inquiries may be made through the ECSU Ad missions Office, telephone 335-3305. THE COMPASS WANTS YOU TO SEND IN ALL INTERESTING ARTICLES. BECOME REPORTERS. SEND ALL ARTICLES TO POST OFFICE BOX 143.
