Dr, Evans to Address:
NINETY■ FOURTH COMMENCEMENT
ECSU REPORT
Dr. Therman E. Evans,
Assistant Medical Director
for Connecticut General Life
Insurance Company, will be
the keynote speaker during
Elizabeth City Sttte
University’s Ninety-Fourth
Commencement, set for
Sunday, May 10, at 10:30
a.m., in the Robert L.
Vaughan Center.
Formerly the National
Health Director for Operation
PUSH, Dr. Evans had served
earlier, 1974-76, as the
Director of the Health
Manpower Development
Corporation. From 1972-74, he
held positions in the
Department of Health,
Education, and Welfare
(HEW) as the Chief,
Program Development
Branch, Office of Health
Resources Opportunity,
Health Resources Ad
ministration; and as a
Special Assistant to the
Director of Health Manpower
Opportunity, Bureau of
Health Manpower Education,
National Institutes of Health.
While at HEW, numerous
programs were developed to
meet the increased need to
recruit, motivate, and train
disadvantaged persons for
medical, dental, and health-
related careers.
In announcing the May 10
Commencement, Chancellor
Marion D. Thorpe indicated,
“Because of Dr. Evans’
earlier concerns and
leadership ECSU has been

implement, with increased
federal assistance, the
Minority Biomedical Support
Program, Health Career
Recruitment and Counseling,
Health Careers Academic
Achievement, and other
programs and services.”
“Thus, we are most pleased
to secure his services during
our Commencement,” Dr.
Thorpe added.
A practicing physician at
the East of the River Health
Center, Washington, D.C.,
Dr. Evans holds numerous
positions on advisory boards
and committees, and serves
as a consultant to several
agencies. Awarded the MD
degree by the Howard
University School of
Medicine, in 1971, he is also
the recipient of honorary
degrees from the University
of California at San Diego,
and Bethune Cookman
College.
Following the Com
mencement addressby Dr.
Evans, Chancellor Thorpe
will award degrees in the arts
and sciences to ap-
proximately 250 candidates
for graduation. Then the
graduates will be inducted
into membership inducted
into membership in the ECSU
General Alumni Association.
Music for the ceremonis will
be provided by the University
Choir, Billy C. Hines,
Director. Immediately
following the Commencement
exercises there will be a
formal dedication.
