He has helped the players to become more aggressive with their op ponents. The team practices every day from four until five thirty. The practice sessions are held behind Vaughan Center. The players are chosen by playing elimination matches. Others are asked to play by Coach O’Neal. By KIT COLE Staff Writer D.C. (Leroy) Beatty IH, better known as “Leroy” by a mojority of the students, bears a very distinguished appearance and projects very scholarly manners in his newly elected position as president of the Student Goverment Association. Beatty is a native of Hart ford, Connecticut and a graduate of Lakewood High School in Roseboro, North Carolina. Presently, here at Elizabeth City State University, he is a History major minoring in Political Science. Throughout his early years at ECSU, Beatty worked actively in many campus activities. He served as an Honor Marshall at Com mencement exercises, participated as an active member of the University Players, and provided his services at the Queen’s Coronation as master of ceremonies. He is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Frater nity Inc. and the Elizabeth City State University Choir. Active participation in many university activities does not interfere with Beatty’s high academic standings. He is vice- president of Alpha Chi Honor Society and a prospective student of Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society. When asked why he decided to run for the office of vice- president, he answers: “To make students aware not only of the social aspects of ECSU, but also the im portance of its-academic and cultural experiences.” He would like to aid in the changing of students’ “I don’t care” attitudes because, he says, “I do!” Students are optimistic about Beatty’s leadership. Fellow, candidate, Pearline Fredrick, says that Beatty has “great potential” as president. James Foreman, senior English major says that Beatty will not have any problems “learning the ropes.” Dr. Eloise Horton Robert- s,Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs says, “you won’t find a more concerned person about the progress of the Student Government Association.” She also feels that student support is greatly needed to aid the prganization. Beatty’s statement as the newly-elected president: “I would like all of the University Family to know that as we live in an ever- changing world, we need to recapture the spirit of the late 60’s in knowing that education and learning is prevalent as a growing need for a matriculation in the future.” Having high ambitions for the future, Beatty wants to be an United States senator and President of the United States, but first, hewants to be Chancellor of Elizabeth City State University. During the matches there are six singles and three doubles played. They are set up in “seeds,’’which means you play the strongest to the weakest players. Coach O’Neal stated, “we have had young ladies to try out for the team, but they did not win during the elimination matches.” The tennis players are Dwayne Banks, Kevin Burns, Dallas Dunbar, Jay Jones, Lee Jones, Harry Lewis, Thurman Lewis and Ben jamin Markum.
