THE COMPASS
^^Together we will find the right direction’’
SEPTEMBER ELIZABETH CITY, N C 1981
WELCOME!!!!!
By Chancellor
Marion Tborpe
Students, you have the
opportunity of a lifetime to
now prepare yourself for a
competitive world that will
need all you can bring to it
in order to make sure that
your future is secure. It is
most important that the
working person of today be
an efficient, well-prepared
person who can compete in
the world’s market places.
It is our hope that ECSU
will provide you with all
the necessary ingredients
to become both com-
petetive and successful in
those marketplaces.
Elizabeth City State
University stands tall as a
major University for
Northeastern North
Carolina and all its people,
so students and colleagues,
lift your heads high.
Unfortunately, just the
lifting of heads will not be
enough in today’s world.
The lifting of heads must
be accompanied by sub
stance, by involvement, by
leadership, by
achievement, by
motivation, and by being
efficient and effective in
all undertakings. This is a
time where we all ought to
have some fun, but it is
also a time to be serious. It
is a time for you to prepare
yourselves and to join
hands for the uplift of our
athletic programs and for
the uplift of a new social
life that is more
meaningful and of a higher
quality.
Those of us who work
here are striving daily to
make sure that this is a
better place for you. We
(students, faculty, staff)
are about the business of
building a better and
greater ECSU. And so, I
challenge you, especially
as students, not to com
plain about or dwell upon
just the frills of university
life, but to make sure that
you are getting the most
out of your educational
dollar that you can
possibly get by way of
study, by way of the
library, and by way of
extra activities. You want
to be prepared for what’s
out “yonder” after
graduation.

As we embark upon another
academic year, it is niy
sincere desire that you will
become more actively and
intensely involved in
university functions. It shall
be the responsibility of this
office to insure that all
student concerns are ad
dressed and that any problem
is impossible to do anything
without your support and
your confidence.
We are asking for your
attendance at every Student
Body meeting and class
meetings. It is here that we
will be able to inform you as
to answers, various activities
and attend to necessary
actions. It is our hope that
you will not wait until Student
Body meetings, but that you
will let us know of your
concerns prior, so that we can
give blanket information to
all.
It shall be our respon
sibility to maintain constant
interaction with all students.
It is of major concern,
however, as to the response
this office will receive from
you. Never forget that we are
your elected officials, but we
are here to serve you. We
cannot serve efficiently if you
sit in your rooms and do not
make us aware of your
concerns and problems.
Because of this need for in
teraction, we ask you to give
us your constructive
criticisms and recomen-
dations. We are available for
your convenience.
It is our hope and trust that
the goals we have set ourr-
selves are a success. We
extend to you these desires
for a productive 1981-82.
Remember: “The Time Is
Now. ”

As Miss Elizabeth City
State University I extend
greetings to all new and
returning students. I hope
that this year will be
prosperous for everyone
united in the Viking Family.
It is my sincere hope that
we will remember our pur-
^se for attending this in
stitution; to obtain the best
possible education available.
I also hope that we can come
together in school spirit,
whether that means
organizationally or in
dividually. Becoming an
active Viking is almost as
important as growing
mentally, for the two hand in
hand produce a well rounded
individual.
Keeping these things in
mind, have a most enjoyable
year.

Welcome all new and
returning students to another
academic year. I hope that
this will be a year of ex
citement, academic ex
cellence, and productiveness
in keeping with the Viking
tradition.
As Vikings, we must
remember the honor, pride,
and prestige of E.C.S.U. It is
oiir responsibility as students
to uphold the spirit which we
are noted for in the CIAA.
However, we must also make
our institution known for it’s
academic capabilities-to
demonstrate the true purpose
for our attendance here at
E.C.S.U. We must support
not only our athletes, but we
must also support our
university family-the ad
ministration, faculty, staff,
the S.G.A., and other clubs
and organizations -who are
all striving to help make a
successful year.
Get involved with those who
are involved. Be a true
Viking. Join the campus
leaders who take pride in
being Vikings and remem
ber: you have chosen
Elizabeth City State
University as your Alma
Mater, so hold your head
high! Make the best of your
stay here! Get involved!
