Vikings IMarch Board of Trustees Letters to the Editor On By Tamara E. Wright Editor Rumors are floating all over campus about the new band director and the com plete change that the band is undergoing in reference to marching style, routines, and the overall image of the Marching Vikings. Therefore, the need arose to investigate these rumors and print the facts. The new director, Mr. Henry Duncombe, formerly the director for Livingstone College, came to ECSU in hopes that the Marching Vikings would still be a tradition during the football season, and that other ac tivities such as the Concert Band would still exist. Simultaneously, Duncombe feels that the stereotype that some Black bands have must be alleviated, and that our band should set a pattern which others may follow. In the process of obtaining a new band director, ECSU also obtained a number of transfer students from Livingstone who are now members of the Marching Vikings. Duncombe says that many of these students transferred for two basic reasons. These students wanted to continue their education and participate in a band. This is why they came to ECSU. Here they can do both without having to adjust to another band program. He also states that no special arrangements were made to accomodate these students. “They will do the same thing any other new students would do." Although the Marching Vikings seem to be making a lot of major changes, Dun combe says that the image of the band will not change drastically. So, you may see combat bMts, new faces, and new marching styles, but the Marching Vi^gs will go on. They may be a bit more conservative, but this, Duncombe says, is due to a greater amount of discipline enforcement, and a helpful change in the attitude of the band members. “The band should be a learning ex perience...it should help make a well rounded in dividual...discipline is essential to any program like this.” And so the Marching Vikings live on. As for the rumors, judge for yourself how you feel the band is after seeing their performance. But most of all, support the band; they too are a part of the University Family. Thank You, Bill Bates Editorial By Tamara E. Wright Editor First SGA Meeting By Tamara Wright Editor On Tuesday, August 31,1981, the first Student Body meeting was held at 10:00 am in Moore Hall Auditorium. The meeting, conducted by the vice-president of the SGA, Thurman Lewis, was to discuss student concerns about the academic year. There were a number of students representing all classes present at the first SGA meeting, and there were also many members of the faculty, staff and ad ministration present. The entire SGA staff was also m attendance. Among other topics discussed. Co-ed visitation was one of many to get controversial reactions by the student body.' The many new policies, read to the audience by SGA ‘ president D.C.(Leroy) Beatty,III, were Well Attended not favorable according to some students. The policy as it stands, however is a “take it or leave it” situation. Either the policy is accepted as is, or no Co-ed Visitation will be allowed. Another topic which seemed to manifest various reactions was the topic of Homecoming. An entire week of activities has been scheduled by the SGA to keep up the Homecoming spirit, but the negative reactions began with the mention of the tentative featured guests, Mass Production, for the Homecoming Concert. The student officers stressed student participation in striving for high academic standards and school spirit. A major concern of many officers was the support of the entire university family in SGA related activities which are beneficial to the in stitution’s growth, and the support of Viking fans throughout the the year. Toward the end of the Student Body meeting, there was a question and answer period in which students were allowed to ask questions or make general comments about matters discussed during the meeting. Housing has become a major problem with the influx of freshnian and transfer students. Living conditions in many dor mitories are unsatisfactory due to overcrowding, and many students are concerned about not having hot water in their dorms. President Beatty, aware of the housing problem, made a comment about the situation; “...this situation is being taken care of, so please bear with it until some further arrangements can be made to relieve these matters.” The class election results were al§o given at this meeting, so CONGRATULATIONS to all new class officers. Student leaders, mingle with freshmen and transfer students, and persuade returning students to become more involved in ECSU. Don’t complain about how “dead” it is here, because YOU are the ones who have to take initiative to make things happen. To those of us involved in organizations and clubs should not limit ourselves to our prospective organizations. The only time that all students seem to come together is at athletic events. This is fine for school spirit, but is this the only time we can join forces on a regular basis? We as Vikings must unite in other areas such as academics, flghts for the preservation of Black institutions, and any other activities which are beneflcial to our institution. At no other time in our lives will we be able to gather in such a capacity with those our own age. "^erefore, the best should be made of our college careers both in academics and in the development of well rounded personalities. To include a very pertinent quote from our distinguished SGA President,' “Remem ber; The Time Is Now! ”
