Everyone knows the sudden fear in trying to construct a research paper, the harsh agony of stepping into the library and not knowing exactly where to look first or momentarily realizing that adequate information needed to complete the paper may not be there. Everyone has seen the library, at one time or another, as a somewhat alien place—almost unknown to them: yet many fail to explore the library before emergencies arise. The library has much to offer anyone who is willing to indulge in the exploration of its resources which are limitless. For those people who have never been exposed to the G.R. Litte Library, there are tours that can be easily scheduled to help orientate them. Handouts such as, “General Tips in Pursuing Reference Problems,” and “Guides to Indexes” can and will develop skills that may benefit one greatly are made What's So Great By Lynette Gutridge Often, we are discontented with our surroundings, but do we ever stop to look at things positively? Take ECSU for example. There are many distinctive advantages about it which are worth men tioning. First, let’s consider the relaxed atmosphere. The students and professors are comfortable with each other and their environment. There is rarely a conflict among students and faculty, or freshmen and up perclassmen. Another advantage for the student is the experience and knowledge available through professors from other countries. Not only are they qualified instructors, but often you learn about their backgrounds and cultures as well as the subjects being taught. When comparing ECSU to a larger university, one of the biggest advantages is the fact that you always keep your identity. You do not become just another number in a gigantic class of three hun dred in which an instructor teaches over a microphone. The opportunity to know an instructor on a more personal level can be a great help to the student. Some may feel that this is not an advantage, but after attending a large California university of 20,000 success in academics—only if one cares to expose himself to them. The media center of the G.R. Little Library offers all resources that are nonbook and magazine that will enhance any classroom oral report or for personal use: film strips, audio tapes, overhead projectors, slides, video tapes, recorders, records, and many other media resources—all of which are available to anyone. If the materials being sought aren’t available in the library, there are ways of aquiring them. The libray has a inter-library loan system that enables students to ob tain the materials needed from other libraries. If the media center doesn’t have what one needs, a system involving the transference of media materials through a state loan system will get it. There’s much to offer in the G.R. Little Library. About ECSU? students, _ this intimacy has great appeal to me. The campus is centrally located to the town of Elizabeth City; therefore transportation is not a necessity. This lets the | student enjoy the life in a small community and ex- j perience Southern traditions. ' Another advantage to consider is the Athletic Department. They have come a long way, and ECSU’s athletes are known to other universities, because of their victories in basketball, football, and other sports. Since the campus is a comfortable size, it is possible to entertain yourself easily. If you walk by any one of the dormitories, you’ll hear music filling the air. The tennis courts are nearly always available. The gym is a great place to keep in shape. Many students pass their evenings entertaining themselves by playing touch football, throwing frisbees, participating in or listening to the band, and engaging ir other activities. The university has grown in size since it was first established, and with all of the new buildings going up around campus, it looks as though there is more to come. So, sit back and ask yourself one more time, “What’s so great about ECSU?” Maybe you’ll be surprised at all the things YOU can come up with.
