Band Uniforms by Nell McCollough “Quality not quantity is my chief concern” emphasises Mr. Henry A. Duncombe, Band Director at EC- SU.Duncombe, a graduate of Alabama State, feels very positive about the future success of the band. Helping toward this success are: Dr. Marion Thorpe, Dr. Jimmy Jenkins, Mr. McLean, and Dr. Edna Davis, who not only take positive attitudes, but manifest them in their willingness to aid the band by their support. “A visible sign in the growth of our band is the fact that sometime in the near future we will be getting new uniforms,” states Mr. Dimcombe. The new imiforms will be neat with bright but not gaudy colors. They will have a style and lines that arie crisp and symmetrical. They will be quite handsome and will bring the focus of the listeners to them. This will then serve as an aid to enhance the eye appeal while appreciating the quality of the music the band members play. I don’t know about you-but I can’t wait to see them! Gardner is Gardener by Michael A. Emmert As the song goes, “From the mountains, to the prairies, to the oceans, white with foam,’^’oiu” country is certainly a beautiful place to live; of course, the ECSU campus is no exception. From the treetops, to the shrubbery, to the lawns, green with grass, our campus is now a place to think of with pride. Now, whom do we have to thank for our gorgeous campus? A pretty, 22-year- old, Gardner; actually, she is an horticulturalist and her NAME is Dale Gardner—how appropriate! Miss Gardner holds a Flower and Nursery Crops Technician degree from NC State, but her title is. University Horticulturalist. Her duties include: the prevention of insects an4 disease of plants, sowing and maintaining the turf on the new football field, and reworking the landscape around some of the older buildings. Gardner, having lived in Elizabeth City most of her life, was somewhat familiar with the grounds when she came here in June of '82; she found the campus in decent shape^ but needing work in several areas. Working with a great grounds crew, headed by Foreman Cardwell Cowell, Gardner got right to work and began to beautify the ECSU campus. In an effort to help her maintain our campus, Gardner asks students to please use the trashcans and sidewalks; valuable time is wasted each day picking up unnecessary litter, while cutting through the lawn eventually kills the grass. This spring as the flowers start to bloom, the trees to bud, and the grass to flourish, let your heart swell with pride at the beauty of our campus. Then we should give Dale Gardner a pat on the back and say, “Great Job!” t THREE WISE MEN by Gwen Nixon During the months of January and February, people all over the world will celebrate the brithdays of three great Americans. In January of 1929, Martin Luther King, Jr. was born and on April 4,1968, King was assainated. Since that time, millions of people have campaignid to have Dr. King’s birthday declared a national holiday. His knowledge and capabilities were of the highest order. King was a minister and Negro civil-rights leader who led thousands of people. As of today. Dr. King’s birthday is offically celebrated in many states and will appear on the Elizabeth City calendar in 1984. However, whether approved or appealed by the senate and congress. Black schools all over North Carolina celebrate Dr. Kings birth with reverence. Dr. King and our sixteenth president, Abraham Lincoln, have two major things in common. They were both men fighting to benefit the people and they were both victims of cruel acts. Lincoln was born in February, 1809. Because of Lincoln’s constant effort to stop the war and to establish equal rights for all men in order for all men to have freedom, his memory has been perpetuated through such memorials as the Lin coln Monument and a national holiday marking his birth. Lincoln has often been considered the greastest of American Presidents and indeed with his knowledge and efforts, he could have accomplished a great many things had his life not been so shortened. In my life time, I have never seen people respect another as they do Abraham Lincoln. Surely everyone has great remembrance of the first president of our country . George Washington had little formal learning, but his military experience and bravery aided him in running the country. It seems that Washington is not so im portant to some, but without him things may have gotten started on the wrong foot. Every man that has helped to advance the world should be remembered and honored. Let us not forget what these and other great men have accomplished. Let us give them their due.
