ECSU Receives Gifts
by R.J. Walker
THANKS
On Sunday, August 21,
Elizabeth City State
University was bestowed with
a $120,000 land grant during
its annual fall faculty/staff
conference.
Two tracts of land located
in Chesapeake Va. were given
to the school by Dr. Jessie
Lawrence, a 1947 graduate of
ECSU. Each tract of land has
a house located on it.
Both tracts of land will go
into the school’s endowment
fund. Academic and athletic
scholarships will benefit from
any income that the two
tracts of land produce.
Mrs Lula Thorpe, wife of
our late chancellor, Marion
D. Thorpe, also presented the
school v/ith two gifts. Mrs.
Thorpe presented the school
with a $1,000 check to use for
ECSU’s stadium drive and
the Chancellor and Mrs.
Marion D. Thorpe scholar
ship fund.
Greetings Fellow Vikings,
As President of the Student
Government Association , I
would like to entend a warm
welcome to all new and
returning students.
It shall be our goal and
yours to make the upcoming
year one of the most
prosperous and enl^;;’'‘ing for
all. The motto for the up
coming year expresses the
sentiment with which we
shall address all concerns.
We hope that your en
deavors this year will leave
you satisfied and that you will
make frequent visits to our
offices so that we will be
more capable of serving you.
The other gift Mrs. Thorpe
gave was a potrait of the late
Dr. Marion D. Thorpe. This
potrait will be hung in the
lobby of Thorpe Hall.
Also at the conference Dr.
Jimmy R. Jenkins, ECSU’s
Interim Chancellor stressed
the need for more recruit
ment of white students of the
Albemarle area by ECSU. Dr.
Jenkins pointed out that even
though ECSU is the second
most integrated school in the
University of North Carolina
system we still lose white
students in this area.
You have before you the
opportunity of a life time. The
opportunity to prepare
yourself for a competitive
world that will require all
you bringto itin order to
assure yourself a secure
future. Take advantage of
this opportunity to prepare
yourself by being aware of
whats happening on this
campus and by being in
volved.
Remember, TOGETHER
WE CAN MAKE A DIF
FERENCE.

Association
Dr. Jenkins pointed out that
there will be stronger em
phases put on recruitment of
area white students. The
faculty and staff were also
informed that ECSU has a
plan to phase in $3.5 million in
new computer programs in
the next five years.
The conference turned out
to be very prosperous for
ECSU. This could be a sign of
a very successful future for
ECSU. Dr. Jessie Lawrence
and Mrs. Lula Thorpe should
be commended for demon
strating the true Viking
spirit.
