Cancer
If you have a healthy in
terest in good health, here are
some questions and answers
that may help you understand
more about your body.
Q. Why is early detection so
important?
A. Cancer is very often
curable if it is discovered
early. Treatments are often
more effective and easier on
the patient if the tumor has
not grown and spread to other
parts of the body.
Q. How can I tell if I might
have cancer?
A. You know your body-how
it looks and how it feels-better
than anyone else.As a result,
you will usually be the first
one to notice any changes.
Therefore, you are a very
important person in the early
detection of cancer. Learn the
possible signs, or symptoms,
of cancer. Be alert to such
changes in your body.
Q. What should I do if I find
one of those signs?
A. If one of the symptoms
lasts more that two weeks,
you should see a doctor right
away. Don’t wait for the
symptom to become painful.
Pain is not usually an early
sign of cancer. When you call
to make an appointment, be
sure to say that you are
concerned about cancer.
In men, the symptoms of
prostate cancer can be
caused by an infection or
some other condition. Only a
doctor can tell for sure.

Sickle Cell Anemia
The fight against sickle cell
anemia, the inherited blood
disease that affects one out of
every 500 black Americans, is
getting a boost this year from
a nationwide campaign
headed by celebrated athlete
Willie Stargell.
Stargell, former All-Star
baseball player for the Pitt
sburgh Pirates, is national
spokesman for the second
annual major fund-raising
campaign to help the
National Association for
Sickle Cell Disease (NASCD).
The project is under the
auspices of Champale, Inc., a
subsidiary of Iroquois
Brands.
One of the nation's star
athletes, Willie Stargell, is
putting more power into the
national campaign against
sickle cell disease.
During March and April,
Champale will make cash
contributions to NASCD.
Look for Willie Stargell
posters which hold canisters
for cash donations by the
general public at retail
outlets. Moneys raised by
that portion of the effort will
go directly to the local
NASCD chapters.
Part of the campaign will
be a major public services
publicity effort to focus at
tention on the programs of
fered by NASCD. Willie
Stargell, who has devoted
many years to the fight, will
appear on national media
interviews during the cam
paign.
The Association,
headquartered in Los
Angelas, is a national
voluntary organization of
community groups working
full time to provide com
prehensive program
research, screening, coun
seling, education and other
services to those affected
with sickle cell disease and to
their families.
