Black Health News Cancer If you have a healthy in terest in good health, here are some questions and answers that may help you understand more about your body. Q. Why is early detection so important? A. Cancer is very often curable if it is discovered early. Treatments are often more effective and easier on the patient if the tumor has not grown and spread to other parts of the body. Q. How can I tell if I might have cancer? A. You know your body-how it looks and how it feels-better than anyone else.As a result, you will usually be the first one to notice any changes. Therefore, you are a very important person in the early detection of cancer. Learn the possible signs, or symptoms, of cancer. Be alert to such changes in your body. Q. What should I do if I find one of those signs? A. If one of the symptoms lasts more that two weeks, you should see a doctor right away. Don’t wait for the symptom to become painful. Pain is not usually an early sign of cancer. When you call to make an appointment, be sure to say that you are concerned about cancer. In men, the symptoms of prostate cancer can be caused by an infection or some other condition. Only a doctor can tell for sure. Sickle Cell Anemia The fight against sickle cell anemia, the inherited blood disease that affects one out of every 500 black Americans, is getting a boost this year from a nationwide campaign headed by celebrated athlete Willie Stargell. Stargell, former All-Star baseball player for the Pitt sburgh Pirates, is national spokesman for the second annual major fund-raising campaign to help the National Association for Sickle Cell Disease (NASCD). The project is under the auspices of Champale, Inc., a subsidiary of Iroquois Brands. One of the nation's star athletes, Willie Stargell, is putting more power into the national campaign against sickle cell disease. During March and April, Champale will make cash contributions to NASCD. Look for Willie Stargell posters which hold canisters for cash donations by the general public at retail outlets. Moneys raised by that portion of the effort will go directly to the local NASCD chapters. Part of the campaign will be a major public services publicity effort to focus at tention on the programs of fered by NASCD. Willie Stargell, who has devoted many years to the fight, will appear on national media interviews during the cam paign. The Association, headquartered in Los Angelas, is a national voluntary organization of community groups working full time to provide com prehensive program research, screening, coun seling, education and other services to those affected with sickle cell disease and to their families. \5* ^ Miss ECS U Greetings Fellow Vikings: As Miss Elizabeth City State University 1983-84, I would like to extend to you a very cordial welcome.
