• JIJ The First Joint Effort by the Department of Modern Languages and the Department of Music submitted by Emery Scipio The ECSU University Players will undertake another ambitious season of productions beginning with the musical “Purlie.” This musical adaptation of the play “Purlie Victorious” by Ossie Davis will mark the first time that a musical has ever been produced by the Players. “Purlie” will be staged by Shawn Smith, Assistant Professor of Drama and Manager of the Players. Billy C. Hines, Choir Director and Assistant Professor of Music, will serve as Musical Director. Mr. Willie G. McElroy, Director of University Bands, will con duct the band for the play. The action of “Purlie” occurs in the recent past and centers around the exploits of an energetic young preacher, Purlie Victorious, who schemes to get the funds necessary for buying a small church. The Broadway production won rave reviews from the critics. “The book is so strong, the performance so magnificent, that this musical should have you calling “Hallelujah!” wrote the New York Times critic, who went on to say, “By far the most successful and richest of all black musicals.” “Purlie” brought instant fame to original cast mem bers, Melba Moore and Sherman Hemsley, and in troduced the hit song “I Got Love.” Have something to say to that special someone? In ad dition to these exceptional major productions, the Players also plan two workshop productions: Neil Simon’s comedy “The Good Doctor” will be performed in December and a bill of one- act plays will be offered in April. “Purlie” will run for two performances, Thursday and Friday, November 10 and 11, in Moore Hall Auditorium. Curtain time each evening is at 8; 15. Kenneth L. Lanier will serve as production stage manager, Rick L. Jones will be stage manager, and Marsha Williams will be assistant director. Dance numbers in the show will be staged by Algie H. Mabry, Jr. and Stephanie Allen. Costume mistresses will be Zelene M. Bunch and Mary Knighton, and Amanda Miller will be property mistress. Technical director and designer for “Purlie” will be David Raper. Wishing ECSU a successful year. The point-after was no good. The score was 20-13, Vikings. With the ball in Bowie State’s possession, a pass was intercepted by Banks who ran another touchdown for the Vikings. Bowie State threw a pass which was intercepted by the Vikings’ #5 James Holman, from Norfolk, VA. Robinson threw a pass to #8 Johnnie Woodbury also from Norfolk. The fourth quarter ended with an interception by #21 Darryl Godfrey, from Nor folk, VA. The final score, 27-13, the Vikings. Congratulations to Dr. Dan Pearce, Associate Professor of Art, for completing his doctoral studies at The George Washington University with his successful defense of his dissertation on September 19,1983.
