R.J. Walker- and Pieces from ^the Editor’s Desk In this year’s first issue of the COMPASS, I welcomed you all back and wished you a very successful year. In this issue, I would like to express my deep feelings of ad miration for the ECSU “Marching Vikings.” First of all Mr. McElroy has done an excellent job with the band thus far. The band performed with much style and togetherness in their first three halftime shows. On behalf of the COMPASS staff I would like to congratulate Mr. McElroy on his success thus far, but credit is due somewhere else also. After the departure of the former band director the band was left without a band director for a short period of time. Under the leadership of the two drum majors the entire band was able to hold practices and sustain the Viking spirit. Don’t get me wrong the entire band did their own individual part in keeping everything in order. The ECSU “Marching Vikings” are to be com mended by the total University Family. Editor-in-Chief R.J. She is currently quite busy putting this theme into practice and involving all of her team members. Other members of the SGA this year include: Vice President, Timothy Okeke; Corresponding Secretary, Algie H. Mabry, Jr.; Recording Secretary, Vera Patillo; Treasurer, Anthony V. Washington; and Miss ECSU Inez Campbell. President Anderson em phasizes that all ECSU students are members of the team. She would like to see more student participation around campus. The next SGA meeting is on Tuesday, October 11, and all students are urged to attend. This is The major way in which the students can have a voice in the SGA. President Anderson is also working on another way: the placing of suggestion boxes at various sites on campus. Jenkins , continued from page 1 know, a search committee has scrutinized applicants for the position of Chancellor and will forward the names of at least two candidates to President Friday who will make the final choice. I sincerely believe, however, that my educational background, my professional training and in particular, my on-the-job experience right here at ECSU would provide a unique opportunity for this institution to continue its forward movement without interruption. I would not need 3 or 4 years of orientation and adjustment to learn the in ternal workings of the in stitution, as well as the ex ternal dynamics affecting it. In my opinion, these 3 or 4 years could be the critical period needed for the success Staff Rick Wilkins, Lawrence Wright, Jackie Godfrey, Rita Carroll, Jean Rutledge, Diane Williams, Shawn Watson, Gary Savage Secretaries Candace Teel, Michelle Johnson, Tecia Marvelle, Kim Lewis Advisors Dr. Anne Hen derson, Dr. Robert Thorne, Mrs Diane Gardner NEM^ Together ive can ma ke a difference/’ President Anderson is still waiting for the budget so that she can finalize the plans for Homecoming events. There is currently a committee in volved in making the Co- Vistor Policy, and there is also a “Round-Up Com mittee” around campus to collect dishes and glasses that have been borrowed from the cafeteria. The SGA is sponsoring a pompom and button sale. The response has been very good so far. The purpose of the sale is to motivate campus spirit. The button reads“When You Say Vikings, You’ve Said It All.” The SGA encourages all students to purchase one, but more importantly to wear it. of the University. For this reason I believe that my background and my years of experience uniquely place me in the position to ‘keep the ball rolling’ positively, constructively, and dramatically, and to use the coming years to build on the foundation already laid and to make the institution a truly regional and dynamic University.” “Finally, I want to say that the chancellor of any in stitution must have the confidence and support of the students, faculty, staff, the general administration of the university, community and state leaders, and, last but but not least, the grass roots of the general public. I am proud to be able to point to the record of support I have received from these quarters, and I would like to use this opportunity to express my heartfelt and humble ap preciation to all those in dividuals who openly voiced their support of me as the next Chancellor of ECSU.” As a senior student of ECSU and as Editor-in-Chief of the COMPASS, I believe that this interview was warranted and its inclusion in this issue of the student paper appropriate as a statement of ap preciation to Dr. Jimmy R. Jenkins for his diligence, loyalty, quality leadership, and loving service to our University. Whether he wins or loses, (and hopefully it will be the former) in the race for by A J Giovanni A project that President Anderson is enthused about is obtaining buses for the out-of- town football games. These buses are available to the students at minimum cost, and there are 26 seats to each game. Reservations can be made at the front desk in the University Center. Besides the open SGA meetings held monthly, the SGA Executive Board meets every week ,and the Cabinet meets every other week. It is difficult not to catch the campus spirit from Miss Anderson. She radiates it with warm enthusiam. She invites her team members to come by her office at anytime; she is open to ideas feelings, and suggestions. ECSIT is fortunate to have such a dynamic SGA this year. It should help to en courage more students to participate and have an active voice on campus. New “Idiot” on the Block Hi! For those of you who haven’t met or even heard of me yet, I’m Da Via Purnell the new Assistant Editor of the COMPASS. My job is to absorb all there is to know pertaining to the newspaper. This would help prepare me for the position of Editor-in- Chief. Being the Assistant Editor also gives me the chance to meet and talk with people. I’ve met some pretty nice people already by being on the COMPASS. Eventhough I’m the only Sophomore on the staff, they still treat me pretty cool. I’m proud to be a member of the COMPASS staff. I’m sure its going to be an exciting year for me. Next Issue.,., Tuition Increase.. Campus Royalty.. Gridiron Outlook.. the Chancellorship, the University will always owe Dr. Jenkins a debt of gratitude which can never be repaid.
