Dr. Jimmy R. Jenkins Appointed
Second ECSU Chancellor
by R.J. Walker
Friday, Oct. 14 began a new
era in ECSU history as the UNC
Board of Governors unanimously
appointed Dr. Jimmy Raymond
Jenkins second Chancellor to his
alma mater.
Dr. Jenkins graduated in 1965,
received his Master’s and
Doctoral degrees from Purdue
University, and returned to
ECSU as a Biology professor. In
1977, he became Vice-Chancellor
for Academic Affairs.
Following the death of
Chancellor M.D. Thorpe, on
Apr.28 of this year, Dr. Jenkins
was named Acting-Chancellor.
The ll-member Search
Committee -.ijnccllor
included members of the ECSU
Board of Trustees, faculty, the
president of the alumni
association, and the president of
the campus SGA. Dr. Jenkins
was selected out of 175 ap
plicants, recommended to the
ECSU Board of Trustees, and
finally to Dr. William Friday,
President of the UNC system.
Dr. Friday in turn recom
mended Dr. Jenkins to the UNC
Board of Governors. In an
nouncing Dr. Jenkins’ ap
pointment, Dr. Friday stated, “It
is with real enthusiasm that we
welcome Dr. Jenkins as Chan
cellor. We are confident that he
will use his energies for the
enhancement of Elizabeth City
State University.’
On Monday, Oct. 17, Dr.
Jenkins returned to a jubilant
reception by students, faculty,
staff, and community friends
during a University Family
Meeting. Dr. and Mrs. Jenkins
and their three children were
officially introduced as the new
ECSU First Family.
Dr. Jenkins expressed his
great happiness, accompanied
by deep humility, for the over
whelming support and con
fidence that had been given him
in the past crucial months.
At one point in his message, as
he reviewed the events leading to
his appointment. Dr. Jenkins
brought the audience to its feet
when he «aid, “As my mother
would say it, ‘God is a good
God.’”
Considered by the student body
to be the “students’ Chancellor,”
Dr. Jenkins faces a challenging
and, in some respects, an
awesome task. However, with
the depth and breadth of his
experience, his training and
perception, as well as his deep-
rooted and unquestioned love for
ECSU, there is little doubt that
he has the commitment and the
capability to walk with and lead
the University ir,to a brighter
tomorrow.
