Many people have approached
me with positive and negative
criticisms about the COMPASS.
These people include students,
faculty, and administrators. The
only thing that puzzles me is why
does everyone come to me on
campus with their thoughts
pertaining to the paper?
If you have anything to say
pertaining to the COMPASS or its
contents, then you are invited to
let your thoughts be known in
print. We have placed suggestion
boxes at various locations on
campus. If you have anything to
submit just drop it in a
suggestion box and we’ll take
care of the rest.
For students who have ex
pressed negative criticisms we
invite you to join the staff and
show us the way it is supposed to
be done. If there is any other
university related matter that
you disagree with let it be known.
Don’t just sit back and gripe to
yourself. Things never get done
by keeping silent, let the
University know how you feel
and then maybe results can be
made.
Those of you who say that we
never include your name or
anything about you, I challenge
you to do something worth
printing. We have sections for
poems, short stories, letters to
the editor or just rumor has it.
The COMPASS is the biggest
form of communication this
university has and I invite all to
use it and stop sitting back
complaining.
Letters to the
Editor
There have been so many
members of the University
Family who have been sup
portive of the University
Players, and especially of our
current production, “Purlie.”
To all of you we say, “Thank
you, thank you” Dr. Jimmy
R. Jenkins, Dr. James Townes,
Mrs. Jean Sims, Mr. Roger
McLain, Dr. Harry Ghee, Dr.
Edna Davis, Mr. James Blount,
Ms. Ruth Ann Williams, and the
Business Office.
The folks in the Maintenance
Department have been most
helpful, and we certainly don’t
want to leave out Dr. Anne
Henderson, Mr. Bernard
Peterson, and Dr. Robert Thorne
of the Modern Languages
Department.
All of us involved in “Purlie”
are most grateful. We will do our
very best to make you proud of
the production.

I am a counselor in Bias Hall. I
feel there is a need for a coun
selor to work only with the fresh
men young men and W/Bmen. I
think that things would be much
easier for them. They need
someone they can talk and relate
to at times.
I know we have a campus
minister and dorm directors, but
I believe we need someone who is
young and has lived on this
campus. I have had many young
men and women come to me with
different problems.
I have tried helping them the
best way I could. It is not easy
being away from home for the
first time. Freshmen are faced
with peer pressure,
drugs,alcohol and sex. Some of
them do not know what to do.
Please, at least consider that
we need a counselor to work with
the freshmen. I have seen so
many young men and women
come to school and mess up their
lives. I pray that they remember
there is a reason for being here
besides partying.

Mayor Richard G. Hatcher of
Gary, Indiana, Chairman of the
Jackson Presidential Advisory
Committee, has begun a drive to
raise funds for a possible 1984
Democratic presidential bid by
the Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, head
of Operation Push (People
United to Serve Humanity). The
initial exploratory fund raising
effort is a campaign centered
around the theme: “Give A
Jackson For Jackson” ($20) -
President Andrew Jackson’s
picture is on a twenty dollar bill.
However, Mayor Hatcher
made it clear that contributions
from $1 to $1,000 are welcome.
Checks or money orders should
be made payable and sent to:
Jackson Presidential Advisory
Committee, Gainer National
Bank, 504 Broadway, Gary, IN
46402.
Mayor Hatcher explained,
“Jesse Jackson is exploring the
possibility of seeking the
Democratic nomination for
President in the 1984 primaries.
He has said that three things are
necessary before he will say
‘Yes, I am a Democratic
presidential candidate’
MASSES (national and Black
opinion polls show strong support
for Jackson): MACHINERY (a
national group of supporters that
reflects the rainbow coalition
and will organize and sponsor his
candidacy); and Money (one
cannot run a credible campaign
without money).
“The polls and the crowds are
saying ‘Run, Jesse, Run,' but
unless the people put their money
where their mouth is ‘Run, Jesse,
Run’ could turn into ‘See Jesse
Run.’ In order to keep that from
happening, basic people all
across America need to support
Jesse Jackson’s exploratory
efforts NOW to demonstrate to
him that if he decides to run it is
clear that the people will
financially support his can
didacy,” Hatcher said.
Mayor Hatcher said that
should Jesse Jacksdson become
a candidate aU monies raised in
the name of exploring would
automatically be applied to a
“Jackson For President Com
mittee.” In addition, all funds
contributed to the exploratn
committee would count towaw
federal matching funds |

funds a candidate is requir^
raise $5,000 in 20 states in
tributions no larger than $250
Chairman Hatcher made it
clear that if Jesse Jackson does
not become a candidate, moiZ
left over from the exploratorv
process will be returned
proportionately to the con
tributors. Inquiries can be made
