Various Meanings from People Around
• the Yard are Around This Page
I
by Mike Moore
Mike Moore - Christmas is
sharing time with some very
special mortals (our parents)
because of the realization that
they will not always be around to
share time with. Christmas is a
time to kill the childhood fantasy
of Santa Claus and , indeed, all
childhood conceptions.
Since its inception, the
meaning of Christmas has un
dergone several dramatic
changes. Initially, Christmas
brought much jubilation as a
religious holiday celebrating the
birth of Christ. Since that time, it
has been celebrated as a deeply,
perspnal holiday ,and now,many
people see Christmas strictly as
a time of commercial gain.
The idea of exchanging gifts at
Christmas time originated with
the Magi bringing gifts from the
Orient to the infant Christ. They
laid gold, frankencense and
myrhh at the base of Christ’s
cradle to show their unwielding
love for him.
This action heralded the
secondary meaning ‘of Christr
mas. The Yuletide became a
time for friends and loved ones to
share gifts among themselves to
show mutual affection.
Todayi Christmas means, to
many,'solely a time for com
mercial profits. The “Christmas
season” as the business world
terms this time, begins the day
•after Thanksgiving. This day in
November denotes the largest
day of the year in commercial
sales Volume. It also tells the
business world generally what
volume in sales to expect until
the season ends on midnight,
December 24.
WHY WALK IN A LINE?
by Lawrence Wright
HOLIDA Y HAPPENINGS
Individuality is a way of ex
pressing one’s self.Yet, when the
time comes that 1 becomes we;
my becomes yours; and she, he,
or it becomes ours, you can be
certain that this lucky individual '
is pledging. Dedicating your timfe
.and strength is a small fee for
^membership in the various
Greek and Social Fellowship >
organizations.
Once one has pledged, the
individuality of the student now
turns into a conglomerate which
lets that particular organization
function as one with various
working units. What is seen on
the outside looking in. are lines of
people marching around,
keeping in step as if the nucleus
of the group stems from the front
line.
Wherever the first line goes,
the rest must follow, for the
^ group works as one. Perfection in
‘ togetherness is proven on one of
those long, sleepless nights. The
line proceeds to walk and the
first one in line walks into the
bushes. Why walk in a line? Why
eat. sleep, or wear the same
thing? Although every
organization’s pledge period
different, each line has a pur
pose. The concepts of unity,
trust, and devotion ^st be
learned so that the organiration
itself is allowed to work ef
fectively. There is a closeness
achieved between the members
of each organization.
Togetherness can only be
achieved through trust and
devotion. Each viriue is needed
for the other to be effective, so
that organizational members
must stress the importance to all
perspective new members. The
reward obtained from those
many sleepless nights is far
greater than any dreams missed.
At the beginning of the pledge
period several seeds are planted.
The organizational members
take great pride in cultivating
the growing seeds. They watch
them grow into one strong oak
tree with sturdy branches
reaching in all directions.
An organization is only as
strong as its weakest member,
therefore stress is placed upon
the need to be strong. Strength
will will aid those who become
weak. The desire to achieve the
highest goals strengthens the
organization.
Pledging can be fun but, like
anything else, the end result is
determined by the amount of
effort the pledgee is willing to
e X e r t . So
congratulations should be given
to The Pyramid Club. Cresent
Club, Trefoil Club, Rasinette
Club, Lambella Club and the
Sphinx Club.
