Newby i The North Carolina lota Chapter of Alphi Chi held an induction of the new members on the campus of Elizabeth City State University on December 10,1983. The new members are as follows: Jerry Lynn Boyce, Alonza Morris Newby, Selina Pittman and Timothy Chuk- wimyerem Okeke. Membership in Alphi Chi is limited to no more than 10 percent of the junior and senior classess. At ECSU a student must have at least a 3.5 grade point average. The student must be a regular student at ECSU for no less than one academic year prior to election. At least one-half the credits required for graduation must be completed. It is also neccessary for the student to express interest in joining during the time the induction will take place. Alpha Chi is a coeducational society whose purpose is to promote academic excellence and exemplary character among college and university students and to honor those achieving such distinction. Although Alpha Chi dates its organization to 1922 , it’s inceptionactually extended to 1915. The Nation Council of Alpha Chi annually awards the H. Y Benedict Fellowship for graduate study and the Alfred H Nolle Fellowships for un dergraduate study. Three awards on the national level will be made for 1984-85 if the number and quality of applicants for each justifies. Details of the awards may be seen on the bulletin board near room 218 Moore Hall. Dr. Richard L. Newby serves as Faculty sponsor for the local chapter.
