The Compass page 3 “Students’ Chancellor’' Leading The Way To Academic Excellence By NELL McCOLLOUGH Copy Editor Dr. Jimmy R. Jenkins is being seen in unexpected places these days. Jenkins observed: “I found the bathrooms and showers not up to desired standards; lounging areas not promoting relaxation for ALL students; some rooms used for storage could be used to house students.” Jenkins believes that live-in dormitory directors are the mainstay of resident life. “As of July 1, 1984, every resident hall will have a live-in supervisor whose permanent address will be a campus address. We pay a good salary - not for caretakers - but for people who can design programs that complement the pursuit of academic excellence,” Jenkins said. We cannot excel in one area, uhile letting other areas lag; all areas must excel simultaneously. ” When asked why he toured the Residence Halls, Jenkins replied, “Home is a refuge from the frustrations of the day. Dormitory rooms are ‘homes away from home’ for resident students; therefore, we must make certain that these ‘homes’ are comfortable. If a student comes in at the end of the day and lights are out in the hallway, his room is cold, there is not hot water -- academic pursuits will suffer.” Jenkins visited the dorms “to get a realistic view of the living conditions of resident students.” Classrooms are another area of student life, a very important area. When the weather begins to get hot, many of our classrooms become intolerable. Referring to the latter problem, Jenkins said, “Central air-conditioning will be installed in all classroom buildings to make the classroom setting conducive to learning during the hot months of the academic year.” Jenkins was also seen eating in the cafeteria, one of the most important facilities affecting the students’ everyday life. “It is vital that the cafeteria provide not only nutritious meals, but meals served in an inviting en vironment. One of our major responsibilities, at this point, is student complaints about the food they eat and the setting in which they eat it. The manner of service, the food itself, and overall atmosphere of the cafeteria inevitably affect the learning situation.” Dr. Jimmy R. Jenkins “Our concern for the comfort and well being of the students at ECSU is not a public relations ploy. We sincerely want the students to enjoy the same living conditions as our sons and daughters enjoy - because we are convinced that a healthy, comfortable, and attractive environment is conducive to real learning and growth.” “I intend to get out from behind this desk to see for myself how conditions on this campus compare with reports I read from various offices.” Student spirit is one of Jenkins’ goals. “When students are proud of their University,” he said, “they will have student spirit. Student spirit comes as an ac cumulation of positive ex periences EVERY DAY.” According to Jenkins, “The University must support the students - if it expects the students to support the University.” > m LoV6 is never having to say you're sorry.
