Frank,
continued from pgl
Frank described some
essential tools for success in
journalism as a writer: “The
individual must love to read,
have an interest in politics and
an inclination toward reading.
Writers are generalists, not
necessarily specialists. They
have a wider interest in a wider
number of things.‘‘
Frank said there must be a
basic interest in the media, books
and the movies. “It is very
important to be able to express
yourself and have the ability to
develop communication skills.”
A writer must also develop
telephone, spelling and typing
skills. Since Frank’s territory is
so large, he must depend heavily
on telephone interviews to gather
story information.
“I would estimate th^t I spend
about 90 per cent of my time on
the phone; that is why it is so
important to have
communication skills,”
explained Frank. “People are
often reluctant to talk to a
reporter over the telephone, so I
really need to be able to reassure
them and convince them to talk
to me.”
Frank commented that most
women writers were aggressive
and self-reliant, but many found
themselves in a lonely
profession.
Frank was encouraging to
future journalists:“Things are
expanding in journalism at a
greater rate than ever before.
There are plenty of opportunities
out there for people who can
write.”
“It is very important for you
right now as college students, to
make contact with people in the
business who are in a position to
help you get a job,” Frank told
students. “It is still a very
competitive field and anybody
you know in the business who you
impress now, can help you get a
job later on.”
