Vikings loolt to CIAA ;
Tourney opens Feb. 23
Following a 116-90 loss to
Virginia State on January 24,
the ECSU men’s basketball
team called a meeting, a
“prayer meeting,” said
Coach C.J. Mackey. “They
talked about it and decided on
some things that they, as indi
viduals and as members of
the ball club, have to do in or
der for us to be a success.”
While he admits its too soon
to tell what impact, if any, the
meeting will have on the sea
son, Mackey believes his
team “is finding cohesive
ness” and is ready for the sec
ond half of the season.
On January 28, the Vikings
hosted St. Augustus of Ra
leigh, a team that had beaten
ECSU by 23 points earlier in
the year. Starting for the first
time this season and at Vir
ginia Union on February 17.
There are two games left with
St. Pauls on February 7 and
Norfolk State on February 21.
While the Vikings are cur
rently 6-9 on the year. Coach
Mackey thinks his team is
still in the race. The CIAA
Tournament will be held in
Richmond, Va., February 23-
28, and the winner will re
ceive an automatic bid to
NCAA Division Division II
Championship Tournament.
