The Compass Wednesday, February 19, 1992 7 The Scotts: ECSU's 'family' connection By Renee Knight To the Scotts the term ECSU "family" has a special twist. The Scotts—Dawn, Hope, Greg and Dexter, from Enfield, NC—are four brothers and sisters who are attend ing ECSU at the same time. After growing up in the same house hold and going to school together since elementary, fate seemingly placed Dawn, Greg, Hope and Dexter Scott in college together, where they have established a new level of sibling bonding. "Life here is not much different than it was at home," explained Dawn, "I still spend more time with my sister, but I'm in close contact with my bro thers as well Dawn, a senior, said it feels just as normal to attend college with her sister and brothers as it was in grade and high schools. Hope, also known as "Lil' Sis," said she agrees with Dawn (Big Sister) adding that, since their coming to school at ECSU, Dawn has been more of a mother figure to her. "Every time I leave Dawn's room she tells me to call her when I get to my room to make sure I got there okay," explained Hope, a sophomore Business Admini stration major. Hope said Greg, a junior Industrial Technology major has also taken on pa rental traits. "He thinks it's his duty to tell us to go to our room as soon as night falls—as if we are going to actually go," said Hope. "I'm the big brother of this establish ment, the Big Daddy Scott," said Greg. "I've placed my sisters and brother un der my wing b^ause I love them. 1 may seem hard on them at times but they'll thank me for it later." Dexter, the youngest, felt that worry ing too much about his sisters may inter fere with his own social life. "I don't say much about what they do, but when I see something that requires my attention, I step in," he said. "They have enough sense to know what they should and should not do." Still, the Scotts are more than brothers and sisters; they are also close friends. New scholarship created to aid ECSU in recruiting outside 16-county region By DeAnna Rudisill Beginning in the fall of 1991, ECSU 'vill offer a new $3,500 annual scholar ship to academically qualified students who live outside the 16 county region served by the University. The new scholarship will hopefully ^ring 300 new freshman and transfer students to Elizabeth City State Univer sity, said ECSU Chancellor Dr. Jimmy Jenkins, and will put the University on a niore equal footing with other schools in the system. In the past, the Incentive Scholarship hasonly reached students in thel 6-county •^ion, and although other schools have also been able to recruit students in the counties served by ECSU, the University I'as not been able to compete with other universities in recruiting students in their own areas. 'The idea originated when some of us Administrations were discussing how we might improve our competive- ness," said Jenkins. "We saw what other schools in the like UNC-A&T and Fayetteville, ''^ere doing with their scholarship cam paigns, and we needed to match them to "Dawn lives in the new complex and Hof>e stays in Dawn's room pretty much all day," said Greg, "so I make it a point to go trip out with them at least twice a week." Dawn said that at times, visits from Greg and Dexter can become an annoy ance. "They come in my room, throw nr»e out, eat up my food, drink whatever they want and say 'I'll get with you later,'" she said. Greg and Dexter said that it is conven ient to have their sisters here because they can do their laundry. In addition to theannoying visits. Dawn and Hope felt that Greg has a tendency to be 'over protective' as far as guys are concerned. Greg said he gets annoyed by comments from guys about his sister's looks. Dexter doesn't take it quite as person ally. "I just ask myself why anyone would look at my sisters anyway," he joked. The Scott family agreed that it was not planned for all four of them to attend ECSU. Dawn, Greg and Hope all turned down their first choice of college for fi nancial reasons. Dexter was influenced to come here by his peers—who came after high school—and by his parents' persuasion. However, going to the same college has been beneficial as far as their parents are concerned. "My parents like the idea that it takes only one trip to bring all of us to college in August," said Dawn. "Even though it does take two trucks and a car!" "The main thing is that with us all ending up here, we can take care of each other," Dawn added. "If one of us needs anything, then between the four of us he or she knows they will have it." Hope said she has tremendous admi ration for Dawn's character, because she did not let being pregnant as a sopho more interfere with her pursuit of her degree and will be graduating on time. Dexter said that in the long run they all look up to each other. "It's basically because we are all here together, yet we still do our own thing." Photo by Aibtrt C. F. Woodley improve our profile of the students aca demically." According to Jenkins, the money needed for this scholarship campaign will come from the Centennial Capital Cam paign, whose goal is $5 million. "We are counting on being able to continue with the five million dollar campaign from 1990," said Jenkins. "We have already raised 1.2 million in cash and pledges." Jenkins said that the new program was needed in light of the declining col lege population. "If we are going to maintain the integ rity that we have developed over the past three years, we are going to have to pay the price," he said. The scholarships will be tied to grade- point averages and SAT scores. Following Jenkins' announcement. The Daily Advance praised the new scholar ship in an editorial, pointing out that the goal would attract more top area stu dents to the University. "The long term goal is to improve the overall achievement level of the student body," the editorial continued, "which will enhance the school's credibility, its image, its future." ECSU seems like a second home to the Scott family. Pictured (left to right) are Greg, the oldest brother, Hope, the youngest sister. Dawn, the oldest and Dexter, the youngest. The Scotts are have a close relationship based on trust and respect.
