The Compass Wednesday, October 21, 1992 19 Letters continued from page 3 them. Why vote? was theinitial question. Well, you'll have old schoolers telling you that you have to vote because your forefathers died for your right to vote. Yes, fliey did figjit for the opportunity to vote but not to vote ignorantly because you feel you have to. Everyone should definitely be regis tered to vote—butnotneoessarilybealigned with either of the tw^o major p^es. If all "African Americans" were registered as independents that would makeouragenda up for grabs to either of the two major parties while having no pre-commitment to either parties. It could also provide the option of successfully running an indepen dent candidate on the local level sud\ as Vermontcongressman Barry Sanders, who is a socialist. In November, the choice is yours—or maybe not, afterlookingatflieoptions. We shouldn't become a people begging for rights and power solely tfmjugh the gov ernment. Not at one time Iwve I seen Korean people begging a politician to take on their agenda, yet as a people they have economic power, which comes from doing forselfanddependingonself. Whetheryou dedde to vote or not become informed on the political agendas of the people in office and who you want to be in office, you should know why you're saying "no," to the process. Business goesonasusual in the govemmentwhetheryoupartidpateinelec- tionornotand what goes on has an effect on you. Tarick Scott Man foraging in trash upsets ECSU student To The Editor An incident occured recently that really turned my stomach. I was sitting on the gazebo and 1 looked towards thelibrary and an elderly man was going through the trashbinbehind Womack Hall. At first 1 thought he was picking out aluminum cans, but he reached in the trash can and pulled out something and put it in his mouth. I wanted to say something but I couldn't I wanted to go over to him but I didn't. I just kept watching him just as the other students did who walked by him. He kept putting a lot of things in the two brown bags he had brought I don't know what his atuation was, but I'm sure he Sex education begins at home, student says To The Editor; When I accept my responsibility only tJ’en can I say I am grateful for my world. The world is what we make it. What we see today are the results of mistakes they made yesterday. What we see tommorrow are the results ofwhatwedo today. Words I came across, soon after Ecirvin "Magic" Johnson announced his HIV test •^ssults. Howappropriate,lthought,educa- fon, urxlerstanding and prevention all be ing the only sure cure from a very hungry disease. Education, prevention, and under standing— teaching that must begin at home. Some people speak outlikeMichael Jack in, Elizabeth Taylor, The National AIDS Foundation and now even Magic Johnson, on the seriousness of this new epidemic AIDS. Some people ignore signs, advice and even deaths of close friends. Clinging to that old saying, "It won't hap pen to me!" Then there are the lucky few who are taught at home—taught that casual sex is no longer permitted and is considered rude and ofesive to the people who really care. Achieving longevity of life is what's hap>- pening now, and what should be taugjit fiistathome. People of all colors, ages and backgrounds have the right to grow old gracefiilly. Eric Skirmer ECSU's Housing Dept, needs innprovenrient didn't have to go through the trash to find something to eat. I know there is nothing thattheUniversitycandotopreventpeople from going through the trash cans here on campus. My heart went out to him when I sawhimeatingoutof the trash cans. Maybe he didn't know that there is help out there for people like him. I look around campus anal see the many people who are collect ing foods for the needy . Then there is the Salvation Army and Soaal Services. Noone needs to find food in the trash but that incidentprovedtomethatnoteveryonehas food when they need it the most. Arw Herring To The Editor: The housing at Elizabeth City State University needs much improvement and reorganizing due to bad conditions and overcrowding in the dorms. There have been many complaints about the over crowding at Elizabeth City State Univer sity. Some people have more than two people in their room. I have seen girls very upset because there were four people in one room. I am thankful there's only two people in my room. Many rooms have no window screens; my room is one of them. I have asked the Director of Housing about the window screens, I get the same reply every time: they have been on order for one year. It seems to me that the Housing Dept, needs to get a new Interviewing the candidate contractor. Sanitary conditionsatdormsacross the ECSU campus sometimes are very un clean. Last week my dorm was not cleaned for five days. Several parents when came to visit for the weekend were very upset. Another reason why 1 think the Housing Dept, at ECSU needs improvement is there is often no hot water. Most of the time the water is cold with little pressure behind it I think the Housing Dept, could at least provide us with drinking water on my floor, but there is no water foun tain on my floor. I think the Housing Dept, at ECSU needs improving and re organizing.
