ECSU players named Ready to win
to first CIAA team
By James Sims
ECSU senior Tim Johnson has been
named CIAA Quarteiback of The Year.
Johnson completed 125 of 302 pass at
tempts for 18 touchdowns, 14 intercep>-
tions. He averaged 233.2 yards per game
in total offense and led the league with a
total 2,097 yards.
"He earned it," said Coach Alvin Kelley,
whose Vikings finished 3-6-1. "He had a
super year."
kelly said he was proud of the other
Vikings who were named to the all-con-
ference team: deferisive lineman Everett
Mdver, defense back Shannon Pender
grass and center Demetrius Hardison.
Kelly said he was especially happy for
Hardison.
"This ^y was a super player for us,"
Kelly said. "He was a captain, a team
leader. To be a first-team, all conference
lineman in this league, you have to be a
player."
Hardison said being selected as an All-
CIAA footplayer "is a very big honor for
me. It is one of the main goals I set for
myself during my four years of college
football."
Hardison said he was surprised to have
been selected as a first-team player.
Hardison said if he had played center
all four years "I might have b^n able to
accomplish one or two of my other goals.
Black-College All-American and /or a
shot at the NFL."
Pendergrass had six interceptions, two
of which he returned for touchdowns. He
was a walk-on player his second year at
ECSU.
Pendergrass said that his outlook for
the team next season is "we don't start out
vdth trying to win the championship in
our first game but take one game at a
time, and the championship will be ours
for the taking."
Mdver made the all-CIAA team for a
third straight year. It was the second
consecutive year he was named its De
fensive Player of the Year.
ECSU Vikings also put three players on
the second team, Wilson Bolden, Carl
Hines and Gene Stovall.
Bolden was a senior receiver; Hines, an
offensive right tackle; and Stovall a sopho
more defensive back.
Kelly said he wished some other Vikes
could havegotten the CIAA recognition—
indudingdefensive tackle ReggieWorlds,
starting linebackers Spencer Abraham,
Jamarle Amold and Van Freeman.
He also praised Andre Nelson, who
scored 14 touchdowns and rushed for
653 yards.
Viking offensive lineman Herman
Kemp was named to the all-freshman
team.
