6 The Compass Wednesday, Decembers, 1992 Homecoming concert bombs at ECSU By Kysha Gaiy Rap artists Eric B. and Rakimgot paid in full, but concert goers were far from happy with the outcome of the home coming concert, held Oct. 30th in the Robert Vaughan Center. Concert goers were in a bad mood due to long lines and an hour wait for the concert to begin. The concert, which was supposed to start at8 o'clock, didn't start until nearly ten p.m. "The concert was a total waste of time and money," said Robin Johnson, an ECSU junior. "I wasn't personally in terested in the artists that were chosen for the concert, but after the price of the tickets were lowered from $10 to$5,1 thought it would be an offer I couldn't refuse. But after going I wish that I had refused it." "Things never seem to start on time. Photo by James Sims "Rap is OK. but who wants to listen to it all night?" Tara Jones especially here at ECSU," Johnson added. "The concert was scheduled to start at 8:00 p.m., but we had to wait outside for at least an hour and a half just to get into the building, not to men tion the pushing and shoving that started after the doors were finally opened." Many students said they didn't go to the concert even after the price was dropped because they didn't like the artists who were performing. "Rap is okay but who wants to listen to it all night?" said Tara Jones, a fresh man English major. "I don't like rap enough to spend money to see them in concert." -'V mutmm Several students also complained about having to pass through metal detecters, operated by ECSU security officers, who also frisked the males. The metal detecters are part of a new policy to be used at all functions, ac cording to Ms. Myrtle Johnson, of the campus security department. 'The pur pose is to deter all metal objects, such as guns, knives and brass knuckles, that could cause injury," Johnson said. The first acts were put on by the stu dents who won the talent show. The audience then had to wait thirty minutes for the first rap group. Da' Youngsters, to perform. Da' Youngsters performed only two songs, "Pass The Photo by James Sims Mike, Y'all," and "Something for the Youngsters." Following this performance, studenls had another wait for Eric B and Rakim. SC A booked the two rappers for Friday rather than Saturday night because thej said Halloween was a holiday & would therefore cost double their usual fee. To pump up the aowd, the two rap artists exhort^ groups in the audience to insult each other. They performed five songs, "Mahogony," "Paid in Full," "Don't Sweat the Technique," "Eric B. forPresi' dent," and Eric B. Got Soul." Eric B and Rakim threw the miao- phone down and walked off stage around 11:30, after complainisg about the sound system. After the concert ended, the pre-dawn dance, also held in the Vaughan Center, was over around two p.m. I ECSU students perform during the talent show, held Oct. 29 in Williams Hall.Students (trom left to right) are Tymesia Pope, Tayla Carney, and Ta-Tanisha Jordon.
