WRVS held its 12th annual media corvference April 4th in the K.E. White Graduate Center. A reception was held on the 3rd in Debonaires' Bridal Shop. ECSU will take on Fayetteville State University in the First Down East Vi king Football Classic, on Sept. 12, at 4:00 p.m., in Rocky Mount, N.C. "The football game will be a very important event on our Fall 1998 foot ball schedule," said Chancellor Mickey Bumim. "Rocky Mount as the host city is strategically located for us since many of our students and alumni re side in or have come from this area." Bumim said the event would allow the university to enhance "our educa tional outreach, strengthen our rela tions with alunmi, broaden our fan base and showcase out intercollegiate ath letic program." ECSU Vikings will host the Fayetteville State Broncos at the Rocky Mount Senior High Athletic Complex. Both universites are in the CIAA com plex and "have a large base of fans and alumni in the Rocky Mount area," ac cording to a news release issued by ECSU's Office of Public Relations. ECSU Athletic Director Dr. Edward McLean said Rocky Movmt is an ideal place for the first annual football clas sic. "Its location off 1-95 makes travel easy for many fans and alimini in North and South Carolina," said McLean, "as well as those who live in the Virginia and Washington, D.C. areas." Correction: The March 4 issue of The Compass incorrectly reported that Captain Mat thew Peele has been director of the ROTC program at ECSU for the past six years; Peele, however, was director of the program last year. The current director is Major Sharon Rogers. The Compass regrets this error. Ms. Lavenia Dameron, a 1995 gradu ate of ECSU's English/News Media program was recently promoted to as sociate producer for the Noon and Sun rise Shows, at Channel 7, WITN, in Washington, N.C. Dameron is a former editor for The Compass. ECSU's Honda All-Star Challenge Team advanced to the quarter finals and earned $7,500 in scholarship money at the national competition in Orlando, Fla. ECSU received an addi tional $1,000 on behalf of team mem ber James Martin, III, for making the All-Star Team. Team members were Harold Wicent Lawson, captain; Shaunell McMillan, Darnell Woods, James Martin ID, and Deanne Morring. ECSU will celebrate Viking Fest week, April 20-25, with a fashion show, Mr. ECSU Contest, pool party, block party and step show. The Department of Military Science will hold the Spring Commissioning Ceremony on May 8 in the K.E. White Graduate Center at 11:00 a.m. Three cadets, Robin Williams, Bobby Burrus and Demetrius Melton, will be com missioned as second lieutenants in the United States Army. ECSU's University Choir will holds its spring concert on Sunday, April 19, at 7:30 p.m. in Moore Hall Auditorium. Omari Salisbury, a senior geology major, traveled to Loveland Colorado recently to leam about a spectropho tometer, a device that records the light intensity of a liquid to measure its lead content. ECSU Viking Raquita Washington has been named CIAA Rookie of the Year. Derrick Hines, Ryan Taylor and Anthony Harris were named to the 1997-98 AU-CLAA Basketball Team. ECSU will honors student athletes at the Athletics Awards Banquet, to be held Sunday, April 26 at 2:00 p.m. in the K.E. White Graduate Center. Key note speaker will be Reggie Langhome, an ECSU alimmus and former NFL player with the Cleveland Browns. Like to play golf? ECSU has formed its first co-ed golf club. Organized by Dr. Edward McLean, director of athletics, the club will participate in tournaments as a team. "We decided to go with the club ap proach until the team fully complies with CIAA and NCAA regulations," said McLean. The club approach will provide golf ers with a years experience in tourna ment play, said McLean. The Viking Golf Club is scheduled to participate in three tournaments this spring. Melvin HaU, Artelia Covington and Garry Walton, members of ECSU's Chapter of the National Association of Broadcast Journalists, attended the Telecommunications Conference '98 Workshop and Job Fair at Fayetteville State University recently. Lady Vikings' Head Coach, Vanessa Taylor, was named 1997-98 CIAA Women's Coach of the Year. Captain Marvin M. Thornton, a 1991 graduate of ECSU's Business Depart ment, assumed command of the Sol diers of the 647th Quartermaster Com pany (Airdrop Equipment Support) on March 26. The Miss ROTC Ball took place March 20 at the K.E. White Graduate Center. Anetria Coaxvim was selected as Miss ROTC out of a field of five contestants, Monique Thompson, Aretria Coaxum, Veronique Williams, Sada Terebee and Jameire Jordan. Forum (From Page 4) campus he saw more beer being drunk on campus during his freshman year than now. "I want to know how cam pus police feel about this," he added. Beamon said campus police was con cerned about alcohol being drunk "out in the open" on campus. "The Chancellor talked to Chief Moimtain and myself concerning alco hol on campus," said Beamon. "He asked that we issue citations, and be on patrol more often, and when we see students out in the open drinking, to let them know they cannot drink alco hol on school property." John Smith, Special Assistant to The Chancellor, pointed out that the Board of Governors and the President of the UNC system were concerned about the use of alcohol among students. "It's a major concern because many students have died from alcohol poi soning," said Smith. "Students must realize and understand that they are not to have alcohol at any time while they are on University property." Mountain also addressed the issue of more space for parking. "We have just recently opened a new parking lot near the education build ing," he said. "We also in the last year issued new decals which allow stu dents who Hve on campus to park in any valid student parking space." Also at the forvim panelist Kenneth Roberts, director of housing on cam pus, predicted that "more than likely" co-ed visitation would be in effect by the fall term.
