The Compass . Monday, December 14, X99S 5 1998 Viking Basletball Outlool( Elizabeth City State University's men's basketball team enters the 1998- 99 season full of excitement and with enthusiasm. Coached by Mr. Barry Hamler, the Vikings posted a respectable 18-10 record last season but did not make it to post-season play. As a result, the Vikings are looking for redemption. "I feel that this team is extremely athletic and has the potential to be molded into one of the best teams since my arrival here at ECSU," Hamler says. Coach Hamler has the davmting task of replacing two All-Central Collegiate Association (CIAA) players, Anthony Harris who averaged 17.8 points per game and Ryan Taylor who averaged 16.3 points per game. Both men gradu ated last year. Despite that, the team has top re turnees in 6-9 junior center Marcus Riddick and 6-6 senior forward Kenny Miller, who are largely regarded as "the heart and soul" of this year's team. Two other players, 6-10 senior center Xavier Wise and 6-10 forward/center senior Che Lugo are being looked upon by Hamler to play important roles for the team. Coach Hamler says the addition of three area players and one transfer player represent crucial additions to this year's squad. Hamler will be look ing to guards William Fitzgerald, a na tive of Roanoke, VA and Sidney Gainey to do much of the ball handling chores. Elizabeth City native Anthony Poole is expected to see a lot of action at the center and forward positions. Poole is an agile, soft-shooting big man who should add depth to the Viking's frontcourt. Prior to coming home to ECSU Poole was at Louisburg College. The team began practice Oct. 15 and plans on a return trip to the NCAA's "Elite Eight" and bring the coveted CIAA trophy back to Elizabeth City at the end of the season as they continue to exemplify their motto:" Bxiilding a Winning Tradition." Lady Vikings geared up and ready to roll The Elizabeth City State University Lady Vikings are geared up and ready to roll. After last years mediocre season the Ladies seem to be ready for stellar night on the town. Under the tutelage of coach Vanessa Taylor and led by Norfolk native Raquita Washington, these ladies are going to be a force to reckon with in the CIAA. Who is this former Vi/dng football standout?
