Honda Motor Company Involved With Historical Black Colleges and Universities
By: Sochiameya Humphreys
A number of America’s Historically
Black Colleges and Universities
(HBCUs) including Elizabeth City State
University, Norfolk State University,
Langston University and Fisk University
have been working to improve life on
their respective campuses and improve
the lives of their students through their
involvement with the Honda Campus All-
Star Challenge.
West Virginia State College has taken
part in the Honda Campus All-Star
Challenge (HCASC) for ten years and
were the champions of the first HCASC
National Championship Tournament.
WVSC was awarded grants by Ameri
can Honda Motor Company and the
grants went toward its computer lab.
Our students are given the best op
portunities to succeed in their educa
tion. We provide a high quality cur
riculum for our students, and are very
appreciative of Honda's investment to
further assist us in developing stu
dents/' said the university's president.
Dr. Hazo Carter.
The Challenge is one of the the pre
mier academic competitions among
HBCUs. It is a question and answer
game based on the award-winning Col
lege Bowl. HCASC is open to 87
HBCUs but only the top 64 teams ad
vance to the National Championship
Tournament.
Every institution that competes re
ceives a grant from American Honda.
The national champion receives
$50,000.
Next March the program will return
to Washington D.C., location of the first
HCASC National Championship Tour
nament, to celebrate the accomplish
ment of each and every HCASC par
ticipant.
Supporting African-American insti
tutions of higher education is some
thing that is important to Honda, says
Eric Corm, Assistant Vice President of
National Auto Advertising.
"American Honda believes in sup
porting African American higher edu
cation. It is important to reward those
students who are achieving
academically,.and we are pleased to see
that students and universities continue

year's conference.
Ms. Thorpe says her honor will be
beneficial to both WRVS and Elizabeth
City State University.
"This was a chance to meet people
who can help with the challenge of
raising funds which in turn will help
WRVS become a self-sufficient radio
station," She said. Flyers advertising
the conference were sent to radio sta
tions and industry insiders around the
country. As a result, Ms. Thorpe, her
accomplishments and ECSU have be
come well-known names in the black
music industry.
to be very excited about Honda Cam
pus All-Star Challenge. Resources like
West Virginia State College's computer
lab reinforces our intent to continue
our support of these institutions," Mr.
Conn says.
Ms. Thorpe says that going to the
conference will expose students to the
real media world.
"The chance to attend a conference
like this will give the student staff the
opportunity to rub shoulders with
people in the industry, and in this
field—that's what it takes to get jobs,"
says Ms. Thorpe.
Cynthia Roberts, a jimior and WRVS
staff member, has attended similar con
ferences and agrees.
"This conference is going to provide
opportunities for internships and to
make connections in the industry. They
are a great experience."
