^ Thursday:wmh 'm;'l999 11 Honda Motor Company Involved With Historical Black Colleges and Universities By: Sochiameya Humphreys A number of America’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) including Elizabeth City State University, Norfolk State University, Langston University and Fisk University have been working to improve life on their respective campuses and improve the lives of their students through their involvement with the Honda Campus All- Star Challenge. West Virginia State College has taken part in the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge (HCASC) for ten years and were the champions of the first HCASC National Championship Tournament. WVSC was awarded grants by Ameri can Honda Motor Company and the grants went toward its computer lab. Our students are given the best op portunities to succeed in their educa tion. We provide a high quality cur riculum for our students, and are very appreciative of Honda's investment to further assist us in developing stu dents/' said the university's president. Dr. Hazo Carter. The Challenge is one of the the pre mier academic competitions among HBCUs. It is a question and answer game based on the award-winning Col lege Bowl. HCASC is open to 87 HBCUs but only the top 64 teams ad vance to the National Championship Tournament. Every institution that competes re ceives a grant from American Honda. The national champion receives $50,000. Next March the program will return to Washington D.C., location of the first HCASC National Championship Tour nament, to celebrate the accomplish ment of each and every HCASC par ticipant. Supporting African-American insti tutions of higher education is some thing that is important to Honda, says Eric Corm, Assistant Vice President of National Auto Advertising. "American Honda believes in sup porting African American higher edu cation. Mr. Dupri will be the host of this year's conference. Ms. Thorpe says her honor will be beneficial to both WRVS and Elizabeth City State University. "This was a chance to meet people who can help with the challenge of raising funds which in turn will help WRVS become a self-sufficient radio station," She said. Flyers advertising the conference were sent to radio sta tions and industry insiders around the country. As a result, Ms. Thorpe, her accomplishments and ECSU have be come well-known names in the black music industry. to be very excited about Honda Cam pus All-Star Challenge. Ms. Thorpe says that going to the conference will expose students to the real media world. "The chance to attend a conference like this will give the student staff the opportunity to rub shoulders with people in the industry, and in this field—that's what it takes to get jobs," says Ms. Thorpe. Cynthia Roberts, a jimior and WRVS staff member, has attended similar con ferences and agrees. "This conference is going to provide opportunities for internships and to make connections in the industry. They are a great experience."
