By: Shekeria Smith Staff writer From February 17-21, the University Players, Elizabeth City State University's theatre troupe, presented the award-winning musical The Me Nobody Knows for a four performance run in the Little Theatre, located in the G.R. little library on the campus of ECSU. Based on the book The Me Nobody Knows, the musical won an Obie Award in 1970 as Best Musical during it's origi nal off-Broadway run in New York City. Later it became a Broadway hit. Mr. Lamar Frasier, who directed the production, said, "It's a good musical, even though it's over twenty years old, the show is still very contemporary." Based on the writings of inner city kids, the show expressed their reflec tions, dreams and observations of the enviorrunent around them. The show included a semi-rock musical score which was added to subjects that in cluded slums, religion, poverty, relief, as well as lighter and simply fanciful matters. The youth featured in the play danced, and spoke as they mocked, enjoyed, resented, understood, rejected, and loved one another and showed in an irresistable sense of individuality that excited the audience with it's power. Frazier also thought the play would be interesting to some of the students at the university and says, "Personally, I think they (the students) will enjoy the show and will have a lot to share and think about afterwards." Mr. Frasier has appeared in a num ber of plays with the University Play ers including his starring role as W.O. Grant in last November's Look Home ward Angel As the production's director, Mr. Frasier has assembled a large cast of talented veteran performers,as well as several newcomers to the stage. He says that the "energy, singing ability, and a youthful quality" were neccessary attributes he looked for in the cast for the award-winriing musi cal. The show's performers included Dor othy O. Wills, Beshelya smith, Celina Gray, Corrine Callins, Shalon Hawkins, Christopher Breakfield, Nicole Gray, Michelle Lewis, James Littlejohn, Damon Freshwater, Je'aime H. Powell, Lionel Branche, Kimberly Carter, and Amy Pollard. The production's stage manager was Jerome Brothers—Khalil Parker served as musical coordinator. The technical director was John Workman. Kelly Mahaffey served as costume mistress. Once again the Uruversity Players enlightened audiences of all ages with what The New York Times critics called. The Public Broadcasting System held a free SateUite Videocor\ference, "Teach ing Literacy to Adults with Learrung Disabilities," on Thursday, Feb. 11th "One of the best musicals on Broad way and unequivocally the most mov ing, the most poignant." from 2-4 p.m. in ECSU's Videoconference Center G.R. Little Li brary, Room 215. The conference was coordinated by Ms. Deborah S. Flippens. Videoconference Held CONGRATULATIONS TO ECSU’S NEW VANS!
