o xtft toMPAsb Fnaay, April du, lyyy News Notes U.S. Coast Guard Holds Awareness Program On April 7, the U.S. Coast Guard held an Awareness Program for all ECSU students, faculty and the Elizabeth City community in the ECSU University Center to increase and broaden community awareness of the Coast Guard's historic role and mission. The visit was sponsored by the ECSU Office of Career Services. Academic Achievement Recognized The Honors Convocation saluted academic achievement and excellence on Thursday, April 15, in Moore Hall Auditorium. The guest speaker was Dorothy Spruill Redford, author, genealogist and public historian. A “l\/lidnight Rendezvous” The ECSU Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) held its military ball for ROTC Cadets, students, faculty and staff at the K.E. White Center on March 27. Annual Spring Concert The Department of Music presented the University's Symphonic Wind Ensemble in its Annual Spring Concert on Sunday, April 11 in the Moore Hall Auditorium. The department also presented the University Choir in its Annual Spring Concert was held Sunday, April 18. Teacher Job Fair ECSU's Office of Career Services sponsored its annual Teacher Job Fair on March 18. Representatives from school systems in Virginia, Maryland, Indiana, South Carolina and North Carolina participated. Activities to Focus on Spirituality The Office of Spiritual Activities is sponsoring "Sunday Afternoon with the Men of Wamack," an afternoon of reflection and focusing. It also offers student focus group sessions throughout the semester. For more information call 335-3642. ECSU Freshmen Win Essay Contest, Trip to Washington, D.C. ECSU freshmen Victoria Hassell, Keisha Stephenson and Pierre Wood, are the winners of the ECSU contest for the 1999 Moses Leon Gitelson Essay Award. The contest was part of the Center for the Study of the Presidency conference held in Washington, D. C. Victoria Hassell placed sixth in the overall national contest and also received honorable mention. The students wrote an essay on the theme "Lessons Learned in the Twentieth Century." An all-expense paid trip to the 30th Annual Student Symposium on Capitol Hill was also awarded to the three students. ECSU’s Honda Campus All-Star Team Finishes Second In Division The ECSU Honda Campus All-Star Team participated in the National Championship Tournament in Washington, DC March 11-15. Florida A&M University won the title, with Clark Atlanta as runner up. Viking team members included Vincent Lawson (Captain), Greg Lawson, Sarah Foster, Deanna Morring and Tinkia Ruffin. ECSU was one of 64 historically black colleges and universities participating from across the country. The awards ceremony featured, among others, Olympic Gold Medalist Jackie Joyner Kersee. Students Accepted at Medical Schools ECSU pre-medicine students Tarsha Joy Darden, Harold Vincent Lawson and Steven Lee Gilchrist have been accepted into medical school. Ms. Darden will attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. Mr. Lawson plans to attend the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. Mr. Gilchrist will attend The East Carolina University School of Medicine in Greenville. All three will be studying internal medicine. “Friend Raiser” Reception Held The Office of Institutional Advancement sponsored a "Friend Raiser" reception in conjunction with the University Choir's Annual Concert. The reception was held on Sunday, April 18 at the K.E. White Graduate Center.
