ECSU Players Present Musical “Tambourines To Glory” By: Amber Hassell Staff Writer The University Players, Elizabeth City State University’s theatre troupe, presented Langston Hughes’ musical comedy, Tambourines to Glory, for a four performance run on November 10, 11, 12 and 14, 1999, in The Little Theatre, located in the G.R. little Library building. Tambourines to Glory, a gospel musi cal, is about two poor African American women who, attempting to make a liv ing for themselves, starting a Baptist church in New York’s Harlem. These leading characters, Laura Wright Reed and Essie Belle Johnson, were played by veteran actress Dorothy O. (Wills) Downing and local newcomer Sandra Sutton respectfully. Downing has delighted Little Theatre audiences with her leading roles in MaRainey’s Black Bottom. A Raisin in the Sun, and The First Breeze of Summer. She has also performed with the Encore Theatre Company in Nunsense II. Ms. Sutton, an Elizabeth City native, makes her acting debut in the role of Bessie. The play’s author, Langston Hughes, was one of the major artists of the Harlem Renaissance. Hughes called the play “a comedy,” yet it is filled with moral and ethical overtones. The major characters are forced to make life changing decision, helped by Buddy Lomax, player by another new comer, Gerald Langford, an ECSU freshman from Bronx, New York. Buddy Lomax is a character who makes little effort to hide his evil intentions; after all, Buddy is The Devil. While Buddy knows the Devil cannot win, he also knows that he will have “a heck of a good time trying.” The musical was directed by William Lamar Frasier, who recently staged The Me Nobody Knows for the Players. Frasier assembled a large cast of forty stage veterans and novices, including Taneisha Armstrong, Michael Edwards, Jerome Brothers, and Amelia Pledger.
