The Compass Friday, November 19,1999 7 Sports NBA Legend Wilt Chamberlain Dies At 63 By Ai Randolph Staff Writer NBA legend Wilt Chamberlain, who died Oct. 12 at the age of 63 from a heart attack, made his presence known throughout his career in the NBA. “The Big Dipper” was basketball’s unstoppable force. He was the most awesome offensive force the game has ever seen. The charismatic Chamberlain played 14 seasons with the Warriors, 76ers, and Lakers, and for the 1999-2000 basketball season the players of these teams have different ways of showing tribute to Chamberlain. For example, Allen Iverson from the 76ers wears a black hand band ensrcibed with the # 13, the number that Chamberlain wore as well as the number which represents his placement on the 50 greatest athletes Sports Century list. The Hall of Famer holds numerous NBA records. Most notable is his single-season scoring average (50.4 ppg.) and the highest single-season rebound average (27.3 rpg.). On March 2, 1962 Chamberlain did the unthinkable and scored 100 points in a game against the Knicks, a record that the game of basketball will always remember and will be difficult to break. Hall of Fame Running Back Walker Payton loses battle with Cancer By Jemayne King Sports Editor Hall of Fame running back and Chicago Bear legend Walter Payton died Nov. 1 following a long battle with cancer. He was 45. Payton was nicknamed "Sweetness" because of his running style, which resembled a stream of flowing honey. Payton the football player was the direct opposite of the man they called "Sweetness." Walter Payton should have been nicknamed "Toughness." He would fight for the extra yard, stiff-arm a defender one play and then juke the same defender silly the next. Payton built a reputation based on the foundation that he would do whatever it took to get the job done. Payton holds the National Football League record for yards rushing; he broke legend Jim Brown's record of 12,312 yards in 1984 and then himself amassed a total of 16,726 before his retirement. The average career of an NFL running back is four or five years because of the pounding they take. Payton carried the ball for 13 years and during that time he set another record for carrying the ball 3,838 times, which is widely considered his truest testament as a player. In those 13 years, Payton ■ missed only one game. \ Photo courtesy www.washingtonpost.com Wilt Chamberlain towered over many opponents during his NBA career.
