8 The Compass Friday, November 19,1999 News Notes Introducing Moon Witch and Tis the Season The ECSU Planetarium, which is housed in a 30 foot dome ceil ing and equipped with a SPITZ 512 star projector and a 54 seating capacity, has been in operation since 1990. It is open to the facul ty and students of Elizabeth City State University as well as the Elizabeth City community. The Planetarium operates during weekdays, evenings and wee kends, offering a wide variety of educational programs for all ages that includes videos and laser discs. Scheduled feature presenta tions for this year include ones for Halloween and Christmas, "Moon Witch" Laser Light Show and "Tis the Season" Presentations are by reservation only and are on a first come, first serve basis. Summer Internships of the Millennium The Institute of Government Summer Intern Program will be accepting applications for the ten week summer program from any college sophomore, junior or senior in all undergraduate disci plines who is a North Carolina resident or attending a college or university in North Carolina. The Institute of Government will have 20 full-time internships, which will pay $6.75 per hour, that will allow interns the opportunity to be a working part of a profession al staff that is making meaningful contributions to state or local government. Interns will reside in a local college dormitory and in addition to working, interns will also be able to participate in weekly seminars and field trips. Ohio State University Visits The Ohio State University graduate and professional school visited ECSU to talk with all seniors on November 7-9. Seniors who were interested in attending the graduate school needed at least a 3.40 grade point average. UNCF Announces Gates Millennium Scholarship Program Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates recently gave $1 billion to the United Negro College Fimd. The scholarship is part of The Gates Millennium Scholarship Program, which is a program that will pro vide $50 million annually in scho larships to at least 1,000 minority undergraduate and graduate students each year. Applicants of this scholarship must be a citizen of the United States, have a mini mum grade point average of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale, be a high school senior applying to an accredited college or university for the aca demic year 2000-2001, a returning college student planning to con tinue undergraduate study in academic year 2000-2001, or a col lege senior or college graduate enrolled or about to be enrolled in graduate school for study in academic year 2000-2001. Graduate students must be enrolled in a degree program in engineering, mathematics, science, education or library science. In addition, students must demonstrate significant financial need and have demon strated leadership commitment in their community or participation in extracurricular activities. Students must be recommended by an instructor and must write a 500 word essay outlining their goals. Language, Literature Communication Department hosts annual Fall Reception ECSU's Department of Language, Literature and Communication held its annual Fall reception and open house to welcome back returning students and others interested in majoring in Language, Literature and Communication. The reception took place on Tuesday, September 28, 1999, from 2:00-3:00 PM in 122 Johnson Hall. The event provided an opportunity for students and faculty to interact and included student presentations of musical and dramatic works. An original untitled work "Doubt" was read by Miss ECSU, Michelle Lewis, and a poem enti tled, "The Calm After the Storm" was read by Ms. Artelia Covington, editor of the Compass. Mr. Mike Fournier, a DJ at WRVS, concluded with a his tory of hip-hop music. Medicine Program for Minorities Baylor College of Medicine and Rice University in Houston are accepting applications for a six- week summer program for minority college students and graduates who are considering careers as physicians. The medi cal program, which will begin May 29, offers students addition al educational experience designed to improve their com petitiveness among applicants for medical school. Selection for the program is based on academic achievement and interest in medicine. Participants will be provided with college credit, housing and a stipend. ORISE Administers Science and Engineering Programs The Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) administers approximately 100 internship, fellowship, scholar ship, and research participation programs for several federal agencies including the Department of Energy, the Department of Defense, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Institutes of Health, and the Environmental Protection Agency. Most appointments are for eight to ten weeks during the summer; however, academic-year, semes ter, and. year-round opportunities are offered. Sabbaticals are also available to faculty as well as funding for on-campus research. Stipends and travel allowances are included for most research participation programs and for fellowships and scholarships, tui tion and fees are also covered. Wiesel’s Ethics Essay Contest to award $5,000 The Elie Wiesel essay contest is an annual competition designed to challenge college students to analyze urgent ethical issues con fronting them in today's complex world. Students are encouraged to raise questions, single out issues and identify dilemmas. First place winners will be awarded $5,000, second place, $2,500, and third place, $1,500. The contest is open to full-time juniors and seniors at colleges and universi ties throughout the United States. Individuals interested in the con test should submit their entries to the foundation by January 21, 2001. For more details such as topic information call 212-490- 7777. An Evening of Music On November 6, 1999, at 7 PM the Word of Reconciliation Church hosted an evening of music with Mary Mancini and Mario Tacca. She is a world-acclaimed sopra no for her command of International music and Mario Tacca is an accordionist who has won many International competi tions. Both are professional artists who have performed for audiences of over 20,000. They recently returned from the International Festival of the Arts in Kunming, China.
