2 The Compass May, 2000 NBC News National Correspondent Visits Campus as part of Vilcing Fest 2000 By Brian Gray Staff Reporter On April 13, 2000, Elizabeth City State University hosted a speak er's forum for students, faculty and staff as a part of Viking Fest 2000. The dis tinguished guest of the day was Ms. Rehema Ellis, a national news correspond ent for NBC. ''Ignorance is painful," Elections Held for 2000-2001 Student Government Association By Shekeria Smith Staff Reporter ECSU is gearing up for the upcoming school year with an anxi ous new Student Government cabi net. Elections for the 2000-2001 school year were held on March 30. Approximately 400 students regis tered and voted. The newly elected members of the SGA are Tremaine Roberts, Attorney General, Keisha Ferguson, Treasurer, Shaleka Eley, Recording Secretary, Felicia Taylor, Corresponding Secretary, Zack Hawkins, Vice-President and Albert Walker, President. Roberts, Ferguson, Taylor, Hawkins, and Walker are all rising seniors. Eley is a rising junior. After a week of scheduled cam paigning, candidate speeches and debates, the student body voted for their best possible candidates for SGA. Student Affairs, the current SGA cabinet, and the Election Board members assisted with the voting process as well as helped in organiz ing the events for the elections espe cially where providing more polling locations was concerned. A gala was held at Bedell Cafeteria on March 30th to announce the win ners. Shekeria Smith, chairperson of the Board of Elections, presided over the ceremony and welcomed the new members. Waquita Lane, a rising senior from Halifax County, North Carolina will carry out the duties of Miss ECSU for the upcoming school year with James Polk, holding the position of Mr. ECSU. The polls showed that voting increased among the students this year. Ellis said during her hour long speech. "We shouldn't let anybody let us think we shouldn't know." Ms. Ellis, who spoke in Moore Hall, did not talk about what type of work she does at NBC, but rather about what type of work and determination it takes to achieve your goals in life.
