Amena Becton, Freshman would go back to the Medieval time or the period of the Renaissance because I like those big dresses they wore. I would wear a gold one.” Dr. Carol Charlotte Jones, Adjunct Instructor “I would go back to East Anglia in the year 625, because there was a shipwreck at SuttonHoo. No one knows who’s buried there; it has rich jewelry, armor, swords, shields, cooking gear, etc.” Inger Parker, Junior “I would go back to the Garden of Eden and trade places with Eve. Then I could resist the serpents temptation to bite the forbidden fruit so that my descendants can live in a perfect and beautiful world, and I could enjoy it with them.” Damion Lewis, Freshman “I would go to Italy during the Renaissance because it is similar to what is going on now, like breakthrough technology, art and social development.” University ID Card: The Key To Open Access Amanda Parker amandayp@hotmail.com ECSU like many other institutions of higher education, worries about pro tecting its students. And one way to protect its students when there are 2,000 of them is with an electronic security system. But when most of the students are older than 18, the question becomes, "do they want to be protected?" As of the spring 2001 semester, ECSU has implemented a full card system. The key card system has been designed to provide safety and security through out residence halls and the commu nity. The residence hall key card sys tem is programmed to accept and al low entrance only to residents assigned to that particular building, dorm direc tors, maintenance workers and other authorized personnel. To some, the implementation of this newly technological advancement at ECSU is remarkable, but to others, the new technique is a major inconve nience. Senior, Shaunte Barnes said she feels safer now that ECSU has adopted the key card system. " Now outsiders can't freely walk into the dorms. The key card system prevents students from po tential danger inside the dorms from unwanted intruders because access is permissable only to those who have proper authorization." Unlike Barnes, Sophomore, Mario Jackson disagrees. "I believe rather than proving to be an enhancement for stu dents, it will become a potential harm for them." Jackson derived this because the key card system does not operate properly to authorized ID cards. "If a student is trying to get away from danger outside the dorm by entering the dorm, but their card doesn't work it can be very dangerous especially when not all call boxes work properly either," said Jack son. "It has cut down on a lot of traffic from strangers in and out of the build ings, and that is one of the goals we hoped to achieve with the system," said police chief, George Mountain. Some problems with the key card system thus far is as follows: some times access to authorized people is denied, usually resulting from a scratch or bend of the ID cards.Special deliverers at times carmot gain access in the buildings also. Although there are a few glitches that need to be worked out. Univer sity officials said so far overall the key card system has proven to be a suc cess, and the Ur\iversity has no plans of deleting the system.
