I
! Welcome new Vikings and
iweicome back old Vikings. It gives me
great pleasure to present to you the
first edition of your school newspaper
for the 2001 -2002 academic year. The
Compass, an award-winning student
newspaper, has been a part of Eliza
beth City State University and its
family for over forty years. Since its
inception, The Compass strongly
reflects the issues and concerns of
ECSU students and faculty. It has
also been dedicated to covering
people, issues, and events that has
affected ECSU and the surrounding
community.
The Compass staff has re-dedi-
cated itself to reporting news, sports,
and events with a brand new staff.
This year’s staff consists not only of
students from the Language, Litera
ture, and Communications depart
ment, but it also consists of an in
creased number of students from
other departments, including Social
Sciences, Education, and Criminal
Justice. The involvement from other
departments displays the interest and
commitment of our students. We hope
that this involvement will help to add
a variety to our reporting.
To accompany our fresh new
staff, we have added new features
and have discontinued others. We will
no longer publish the “Dear Vike,”
column. However, we realize that
ECSU students still encounter chal
lenges daily, such as academics and
relationships. Those two challenges
alone calls for a need for inspiration:
therefore, we have a newly designed
Inspirational column to help encour
age ECSU students spiritually. An
other one of our new features is the
Fashion Page. This page is brought to
you by the fashion editor. It is de
signed to keep ECSU students aware
of the changing fashions with the
changing seasons. It is also designed
to display the campus fashions of
ECSU students.
This year The Compass will be
more readily available for all students;
the SGA will announce in Bedell Hall
Cafeteria, when students can pick up
their copies. Students should also be
aware of The Compass’ new look.
This year The Compass will be
printed in broadsheet, like most
college newspaper are printed.
The Compass is supported by a
host of enthused and energetic edi
tors, writers, advisors, and, most of all
you, the readers. We hope to satisfy
your interests and entertain you at the
same time. This year will be exciting
and fun. Enjoy!
Respect Your
Queenhood
Respect your queenhood
Wear your croum with dimity
Don't settle for tess;
A lesson that should be taught in his
tory
Don't shed tears over unworthy
ones
Preserve them for your t{ing
One who understands your position
is beside him on the throne
On your shoulder, he can lean
Don't be quic1{^ to open your lens
But try your mind
If you search deep inside
Platinum you tvill find
Don't fall for these sweet games
Because they will soon turn sour
The sweetness doesn't last long
Sometimes, it goes away after a few
hours
^ Save your money
Practice self control
First, love yourself
;Vo man is worth your soul
It's better to be lonely
Than to be stressed out
Many can spea1{ a pretty game
But ugly is what they are all about
Respect your queenhood
Appreciate your royalty
Respect your queenhood
Walli in love, live in loyalty

Crime Scene
The perimeter sealed off
With thin yellow tape
Magically rescuing us
From indignation and
Festering fumes of beer
Intoxication and delusion
Wickedness consumes
Swallotving every drop of
Innocence - spitting out
Seeds - spurs of hatred
I
Individuals caught between
Physical adulthood and infantile
Maturity. Fragile moment -
Drum roll of racing pulses
Finale with ripping gunfire
Officers decipher evidence
As early church bells ring
Trees clutch the waving wall
It trembles bearing its burden
Containing our sins within
The birds flee the scene
They refuse to get involved
Perhaps they are smarter
Or maybe that is wrong -
Our ignorance bred this evil

My Cleopatra
To the one and only lady in a man's
heart
This deep passion is creative li1{^e
art
More beautiful than the Mona Lisa
Higher than the tower of Pisa
Let him 1{^now, there's an angel com
ing to meet ya
Beauty so high the clouds are rebel
lious
Love so strong it maizes the sun
jealous
Joy and comfort is what she brings
Li1{e a beautiful angel who lost its
tvings
"Never too late, never too soon
A strong blacl^ queen is where she
stand
Her every wish is his command
She's li1{e a dream when sleeping at
night
Praying to come true in the daylight
But right now it's just a dream
Maybe one day, it will be seen
She will come right out and ta^e his
hand
Then she'll let him l^now that he's
her man
It's obvious that beauty is only s\in
deep
But it is \nown that wisdom is
unique
Wisdom meaning the thoughts of
her mind
Apparel to her face mar1{s his sun
shine
He may be younger she many be
older
But beauty is only in the eyes of the
beholder.
