The Compass Thursday September 20, 2001 Fashion Page J Fashion Seen at ECSU Adia Keeler Fashion Editor NYFASHION626@hotmail.com As the summer is ending, ECSU students are definitely getting that last chance to show off what they have been sporting since the begin ning of the summer. Fashion Design ers looked for 10 trendy looks this summer: 1) black and white look, 2) military chic, 3) a wide belt, 4) Graffiti wear, 5) Fruit and Fauna (instead of the big flowers on dresses, hand bags and shoes), 6) Flirty tops, 7) Slim pants, 8) anything preppy, 9) one shoulder tops (definitely big at ECSU), and 10) mini skirts (another fashion widely shared at ECSU). Let us not forget about the rhinestones, studs, glitter, and fringes that added flavor to many students’ summer wardrobe. The colors this summer were basically anything that you could get your hands on. The shoes this summer were definitely ‘off the chain.’Whatever pairs of sandals or strappy shoes you wore, you were fashionable. There were no “wrongs” in the shoes department this sum mer. The ladies at ECSU are show ing us that they are fashionably aware and that this summer’s trend is achievable even through the swel tering heat. We are definitely getting a taste of what the fall fashion might look like this year on campus. This fall season is full of anything possible in fashion. In opinions of many fashion designers and fashion editors all over the world, the 80’s are back in style and are not going any where for a while. This season the leading color is still black. Other colors that could be used to accent the black this fall season are viva cious hues like brown, plum, purple, burgundy, green, and various tones of spices. These colors will add warmness and richness to the shades of this season’s color palette. The trend being rocked this fall is straight from the designers’ run ways. For the true fashion followers, men-inspired, pin-striped, and tweed suits are big this season; animal print, hair handbags, high-waisted dresses (they accentuate the mid section of the body), knee-high riding boots, and knits with fur (for those on a budget faux fur). The fall season is upon us and it is time to turn in all those strappy sandals and halter dresses and focus on what is hot this fall season. Do not forget when you follow any trend of a season that adding your own flavor makes the outfit truly work for you. Since school is in session and home coming is around the corner, it would be nice to see these fall trends uti lized and last fall’s clothes in the closet. Monterio Hand, Hertford, NC shops at Military Circle Mall in Virginia This issue we pay tribute to black designer, Maurice Malone. Maurice Malone is a 36-year-old Detroit native who moved his fash ion business to New York City five years ago. Within the little bit of time that he moved to New York, he caught the attention of the highly respected organization called the Council of Fashion Designers of America. He was later nominated for the CFDA’s Perry Ellis Menswear Designer of the Year Award. Need less to say, Malone became a mem ber of the prestigious organization. Malone is proud of his past achieve ments but is constantly moving for ward, pushing his creativity to the next level of progression. His Spring 2001 collection is proof that there is more to come for the 2002 fashion season. His ability to constantly reinvent his ideality keeps many fashion lovers on their toes. I Shavonna Newell Fayetteville, NC shops at Cross Creek, Fayetteville Fashion Dilemma Since school has started, our money is now limited, but do not worry because, there is a solution for you. The key in buying trendy clothes or outfits is to buy cheap. Do not invest in so much money all the time in top designer labels that you cannot wear on a daily basis. Settle for the next best thing... KNOCK OFFS. Do not be intimidated by the word or the meaning. You can still purchase name brand clothes but at a cheap price than, let us say, your Gucci or Prada line of clothing. For instances, if you cannot afford the new Louis Vuitton clutch bag, you can get the Coach Logo clutch or duffle bag for half price than that of the Louis and still rock it and be just as trendy as the next person. Here are a list of stores that are trendy and affordable: Old Navy, Gap, Wet Seal (they sell cute little studded shirts and stuff like that). Nine West, or any limited owned store, and do not forget the good ole’TJ Maxx and Marshals. You will definitely get more for your money and stay on top of the fashion world. Just remember that you can still get your top designer clothes (invest only if you are willing to wear the clothes for many years) but try to buy them sporadically.
