The Compass Monday, October 29, 2001 3 t Editoriai ) [ Poetiy (kmter ] FINDING THE STRENGTH TO GO ON Inger Parker Editor ParkerJnger@hotmall.com The past few weeks, since Sept. 11, have been really devastating for Americans and many others across the world. There have been many casualties of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. There have also been casualties overseas. Many families, wives, husbands, children, daughters, mothers, fathers, sisters, and broth ers, have been left behind to mourn the loss of their loved ones who became casualties and to find the strength to go on in spite of the trag edy To make matters worse, there have been even more victims of terrorists’ acts as a result of the sur prise Anthrax that has been planted Inside of mail. This is extremely overwhelming and frightening for many. They ask: “What has this world come to?” We seem to have forgotten that human cruelty, such as countries being attacked on their homeland, has been happening for hundreds of years. However, because one of the wealthiest and most powerful nations has been attacked, people are devas tated and some even believe that it is indeed the end of the world. Well, maybe and maybe not. But in the midst of it all, we have to go on and continue to have faith in the God tliat we keep asking to bless America. That phrase, “God Bless America” should not be taken lightly and spoken carelessly. Americans have been singing the song “God Bless America” for so many years, but do we realize what we are really saying? When you ask for a blessing, you are asking for Divine favor, pro tection, and guidance. We all know that now, as we always have; America needs God’s favor to help us to stay encouraged, to grow in faith, and to show more love to our nation and its people. We also know that we need God to protect us and to prepare us for what is yet to come. When we ask for His blessings, we have to believe that He will do just what we ask of Him. He said that He would never leave us nor forsake us, and He will do just what He said. It is then that we can find the strength to go on. Elizabeth City State University faculty, staff, and students have shown that we have faith that God can and believe that he will give us the strength to go on. We have set an example to the rest of the world. We have moved on with the rest of the semester, and have made it through midterms. We made our homecoming a success: from the victory over Livingston College to the uplifting gospel concert featuring ECSU’s own, God’s /mage. Though many students were effected by the tragedy, they still found the strength to go on with their lives and continued to pray: “God, Bless America!” I encourage everyone to follow the example of ECSU students and maintain your dignity, faith, and love. We should brace ourselves for what is yet to come, and remember; God is still in control. With that thought in mind, we should all be able to find the strength to go on.
