The Compass Monday October 29, 2001 9 Q Sports j ATTENTION ALL DIE-HARD BASKETBALL FANS Courtesyofwww.ecsu.edu Jonas Pope yank6@hotmail.com It’s that time of year again. In gymnasiums all over the ClAA teams are gearing up for another year of competition, and last years’ champi onship games in Raleigh were a sign of what is to come in the 2001-02 season. It should be an exciting one. It should be another excellent year of top-notch play, and tremendous athleticism from all participants. The Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University will be defending their crown in 2001-2002, but the Fayetteville State Broncos hope to dethrone the champs and hope to be the top team in the Western Division. In the Eastern Division the Bears of Shaw University have loads of talent and are picked to win the Eastern Division, but Virginia Union looks to return to it’s glory days and chal lenge Shaw for the top spot in the East. The Lady Eagles of North Caro lina Central hope to rebound from last years disappointing loss in the finals and take home the ClAA crown. NCCU was picked by many to win the ClAA tournament last year but The Lady Broncos of Fayetteville State had other plans. The two teams battled in a hard fought com petition last year but in the end The Broncos defeated the Eagles on championship night. This year the two teams are expected to battle for the top two spots in the Western Division. In the East two young teams, Virginia State University and St. Pauls College, are expected to make a surprise run for the Eastern crown. The ClAA recently held it’s Annual Basketball Press Conference on Thursday October 11"" 2001 in Raleigh N.C.
