DESIGNER OF THE MONTH
Karl Kani (born Carl Williams) was
born and raised in Brooklyn, New York.
He began designing and sketching
clothes at the age of 16. His dad was a
tailor and often took his son to work. At
the shop, Kani learned about the gar
ment industry and buying fabrics.
In 1989, at the age 19, Kani se
cured a loan from his parents, saved his
money and moved from Brooklyn, New
York to Los Angeles, California.
His first company was located in
South Central and then later opened up
a store In the Watts area. The first for
years of his clothing line was strictly sold
them to the neighborhood.
In 1991, he met with the staff of
Cross Colours, who provided financial
banking and gave him his first big break.
Karl Kani Infinity, Inc. employs 250
people with showrooms in Atlanta, New
York, Chicago, and Los Angeles (home
base). His company supplies clothing for
men sizes 28 to 60 and for women sizes
2 to 16. His designer genius has se
cured him a place in the 1996 edition of
the 100 Wealthiest African-Americans.
