MY MOTTO TO OTHERS IS: “RESPECT OTHERS & BE SMART” “TO BE OR NOT TO BE CO-ED?” Shannon D. Autry lilbee77@vahoo.com Most colleges and universities in the UNC system practice the use of a policy known as Co-Ed. Students are given the option of whether they want to live in a Co-Ed dorm or a dorm consisting only of the same sex. Elizabeth City State University has just reintro duced the idea of Co-Ed dorms to the campus. New Residence and Butler Hall are housing males and females during the 2002-2003 school year. Many people seem to be torn on the issue of whether this was a good move for ECSU or not. Some students feel that ECSU is not ready for Co-Ed dormitories and they should keep the dorms set for a single sex. But, is it really Co-Ed? Even though the dorms are labeled Co-Ed, the Co-Ed visitation policy will still be in effect. ECSU is looking out for the conduct of the students because people do not feel that ECSU students can handle the responsibility of a completely Co-Ed dorm. ECSU is not paid to baby-sit these young adults. Stu dents in college are no longer on the high school level and they should be allowed or maybe even forced to accept responsibility for themselves. Colleges in the UNC system allow students to participate in Co-Ed dorms, so what makes ECSU students different? Can ECSU students handle the choices that come with living in Co-Ed dorms? I believe that this first year will be the worst year of Co-Ed because it is a brand new concept for ECSU. But, as the years progress, then the excitement and testing of this policy will die down and it will simply become a way of life on campus. ECSU just needs to stick with the concept and grit its teeth through the first year or two. ECSU has a disadvantage with the number of dorms that are on campus. The other universities that practice Co-Ed also has dorms that are single sexed. It is obvious that the two Co-Ed dorms on campus are the two upper-classmen air- conditioned dorms. A student who does not wish to participate in Co-Ed must then choose no Co-Ed or air-conditioning? ECSU is growing. As a result of Co-Ed dorms. Bias Hall now has air-conditioning. Also, a new dorm is on the drawing board for ECSU. Issues will smooth themselves out over the next two or more years as the university continues to upgrade. Chatting with various boarding students they seem to agree that Co-Ed should exist as it does at the other UNC universities. They also feel that the priority list of important topics in the housing department is out of order. One young lady from Bias Hall jokingly talked about how a roach would greet her at the shower and look at her as if she was in the wrong place. Other students talk about issues with the dorms that do not concern Co-Ed such as the water damage on the ceilings or warped walls that look as if they could cave in at anytime. Talking to any boarding ECSU student about Co-Ed will certainly lead to topics such as these. It looks like ECSU has more issues to resolve instead of Co-Ed dorms. The whole summer was spent put ting air-conditioning in Bias and replacing the old furniture. It will take time to resolve many of these issues and ECSU is working on fixing them. If you have any opinions on the Co-Ed situation, please voice them by e-mailing me at lilbee77@vahoo.com. Some of the responses will be issued in the next paper. We want YOUR opinion! It matters. ^ EDITOR’S NOTE ^ Some people found out about the question that was placed for the opin ions. Five students wanted to give there response. You may still respond to the question and it will be put in the k next issue. , RESPONSES “I don’t like it because there are not enough dorms to do it in the first place. It’s only two dorms that are co-ed. The Alternative Living System shouldn’t be enforced until the new dorm is built.” (Anonymous) “I disagree with co-ed dorms because it will increase the rate of pregnancies, rape, and other vicious sex crimes.” (Anonymous) “All I know is I better not have no guy all up in my shower! And I don’t want to hear my neighbor and her man just because he has easy access to her room, period.” (Anonymous) “I don’t like the idea because unwanted visitors have easy access to my room.” (Anonymous) “Because of co-ed dorms I couldn’t get my single room.” (Anonymous) The Betrayal of Green The color I felt the closest to was green, I would moke sure It went wherever I would go. I would wolKr displaying it with confidence, I would be honored to wear green against my heart. Even though others around me would warn me To not acknowledge this color so often, I still believed in green, I kept the faith that it would make me happy. But one day this color betrayed me, I put it on and it did not look the same. I tried to make it look the way I wanted to. But it continued to make me feel horrible. It was as if the green used me for its personal gain. It would only like me long enough to be seen in public How do you continue to wear a color you felt so close to? That you have loved for so long, When all in one day it does not want to make you feel good? Do you keep on wearing green os if nothing is wrong? Or pretend that it looks the some way it did when I first put it on? As if you feel great and still look absolutely wonderful? Or do you just find another color, Knowing that when you see green on you It will never be the same? —Anonymous Female—
