The Compass Friday, September 20, 2002 5 MORE NEWS the “SOUND OF CLASS” MARCHES ON intramural Sports will be held on the following days: DeTra Stith depot9@hotmail.com “The Sound Of Class” March ing Band of Elizabeth City State University was without even a director or assistant director before the fall semester began. Mr. Ivory Brock, director, left before band practice began in August and Mr. Jeffery Au, assistant director, left earlier the summer. Their positions : have not been filled but Gamaliel “Dan” Cherry, Darryl Isler (Presi dent of “The Sound of Class”) and Russell Autupenas did not hesitate to lend their helping hands getting the band into shape. Michael Gregory and Adrian Robinson also 1 had to compensate for what the f directors did. “The band is doing well with out an assistant director and direc tor. We are well disciplined, and the new band members are highly motivated,” said Sherita Saunders, a junior dancer, j At the Student Body Meeting [ on Thursday, September 4, the f drum line “Poison” performed onstage, lead by the drum majors. “The crowd is really enjoying their precision and how in unison they are. They are really on top of what they are doing,” said Sabrina Brown, a junior, of how well the band is doing with student leader ship. Recruitment is a key factor in developing a band. The director or the assistant director assesses out potential candidates who want to be a part of the band, but without a director the ECSU band has been hard pressed to find its groove. For many students this extra curricular activity is a crucial part of their college experience. “Not having those people in position to do this type of recruit ing hinders people from coming to ECSU and possibly being a part of the band,” said Deborah Vines, a junior baritone horn player. Despite the changes, the ECSU band has really come together during a time when it would seem like things would fall apart. During half time at the foot ball game on September 7, the band performed pieces from Lud- acris’ “Move”, and Clipses “Grin- din”. “They really have practiced for this show today, I’m enjoying it,” states Sheba Andrews, a senior. “If you are not part of the solution, you must be the prob lem,” says Gamaliel “Dan” Cherry, Obviously, the ECSU band has taken these words to heart and have decided to march on as they wait for new leadership.
