The Compass Friday, September 20, 2002 9 ( HEALTH ) ECSU’S HEALTH CAREERS ACCESS PROGRAM expands into NASH COUNTY Miriam Jackson Contributor Mrs. Izila Mouring, Director of the North Carolina Health Careers Access Program, recently con ducted a general health careers orientation seminar. She was assisted by Ms. Miriam Jackson, Coordinator of the Resource Center. The Health Careers Resource Center cooperates with area Health Agencies and has provided numerous jobs/internships for participating students. Many of these students have successfully entered the medical and allied health professions, said Mrs. Mouring. She said that since the inception of the program, in 1974, students have been selected and placed in a clinical setting to acquire on-the-job training and knowledge while at the same time earned money to help defray col lege enrollment expenses. The program’s goals are to reinforce motivation and commit- [] ment for a health career, increase awareness of services provided by health professionals and to heighten awareness of the critical need of underrepresented minori ties in the medical profession.The Health Careers Program was ini tiated in 1974 at Elizabeth City State University, North Carolina Central University, and Pembroke State University. One hundred fifty-three (153) students have completed the clinical work learn ing experience through the N.C. Health Careers Access Program at ECSU since 1986, when Mrs. Mouring became Director of the Health Careers Program. “It gives the students an on hands work experience with health agencies,” said Miriam Jackson, Coordinator for Health Careers. Jackson also says that students will be able to work with medical professionals. It will also help stu dents to make a more definite decision about areas of specializa tion they would like to pursue. Health agencies including Albermarle Hospital, Albermarle Behavioral Medicine, Coastal Rehabilitation, Eastern Carolina Cardiovascular, and Independent Living Rehabilitation were affiliated with the program in Summer 2002. Students will be presented Certificates for successfully com pleting their Summer 2002 Intern ship. The eleven students who completed the program were: Catina Alston, Taneisha Arm strong, Donnelus Brothers, Derrick Daniels, Christopher Figgs, Randy Griffin, Wyatt Jordan, Don Morring Jr., Lachelle Spence, Shala Spence and Jacinta Taylor. Derrick Daniels, a program participated was offered employ ment by her health care agency. Coastal Rehabilitation; and Lachelle Spence received a second place award of $75.00 during the N.C.
