The Honda Campus All-Star Chal lenge program is now in its fourteenth year. Sponsored by American Honda Motor Company, Inc., the Challenge features teams of four students and an alternate, spotlighting the brightest minds on campus. Each team repre sents a participating Historically and/or Predominantly Black College or Uni versity in competition for a share of $305,000 in monetary grants to upgrade campus facilities, institutional resources and improve the quality of students’ lives. Derrick L. Wilkins, Campus Coor dinator & Coach of the HCASC Pro gram, has been enthusiastic about win ning and an inspiration to the students who competed. “This year’s tournament was very exciting. Sixteen teams competed for the Campus Championship,” said Wilkins. Coaching the HCASC for almost nine years, Wilkins says the success of the program is due to dedicated employees. “Departmental chairpersons recruited teams. Freshmen Seminar instructors allowed time for in-class presentations on the HCASC program,” said Wilkins. The Campus Tournament was held October 1-3, 2002. Hosted by Wilkins, he was also assisted by Mod erators, Dr. Velma Blackmon and Dr. Janis King Robinson; Official Scorekeeper, Shellee Rust; Score- keeper, Angela Carver; and Reset- Timer-Announcer, Brandon Strausser. Prizes given to the winning campus teams were $50 per player for the winning team and $25 per player to the team in second place. This years’ winners are the “Gangsters of the Groove”, which consists of Warren Gibbs, Duane Ashmon, Lamar Battle and Jamar Battle. “This challenge is exciting because the questions did not dwell on one particular topic. We were quizzed on music, art, literature, religion and other topics. When I found out we won I could not believe it, but I am so glad we made it through the whole program to become the winners,” said Jamar Battle. “Now that the Campus Tourna ment is over, I will select about 15 students as members of the Varsity Team. The Varsity team will practice until January. At that time, I will select five of the Varsity players to play on the Traveling Team, which will repre sent ECSU at the National Champion ship Tournament,” says Wilkins. ECSU is among the 87 institu tions eligible for campus competition. The Varsity Squad, which consists of Duane Ashmon, Kim Bunch, Donald Cartwright, Warren Gibbs, Clayton C.K. Knight, Don Morring, Jr., Eric ' Peebles, Shannon Penn, Khory Perry, Quentin Powell, Brandon Strausser, Raymond Tann, and Levi Temple, will represent ECSU March 27-31, 2003 in Orlando, Florida.
