trying to have a merry CHRISTMAS
In the real spiritual sense, Christmas
should be a time of rejoicing over the
Savior’s birth, not one that finds us
concerned about the gifts from family and
friends or the 20-pound turkey in the
oven, or the decorative trees and
For this editorial, I address the
materialistic side of Christmas: the gifts.
For many years, the buying and
exchanging of gifts has always been the
Christmas tradition. When we take out
‘Santa Claus,” we see that we are buying
Many people find it very hard to find
money to buy gifts, for example, college
students who pay their own tuition and do
not have a steady job cannot afford to
buy gifts for their family or friends.
For those students without a job,
Christmas shopping is hard because they
have no source of income.
What do you do? Here are some
tips that may help you to have a Merry
1) Throughout the year, buy only the
things that are necessary. Some people
like to buy worthless junk or items that
they do not use. If you do this, you may
have some money left to buy the things
you want at Christmas.
2) Keep a record of how much
money you spend. Set up a limit of how
much money you can spend. If you find
this hard to do, take out a portion of
money from each check or stipend and
3) Give ONLY when it is necessary.
Some people give money to people who
do not need money or need to for selfish
or stupid reasons. If someone asks you
for money, do not immediately say “yes.”
Instead, try to be nosy to find out why
they need money. Then determine
whether it is important or not. This takes
a matter of trust and sometimes you
might have to lie a little bit to get away
with it. Note that some people will follow
the ‘1reat others the way you would want
to be treated” rule. I think of it as a way
to avoid regret when Christmas time
4) Do not be greedy when Christ
mas time comes. Do not just pick and
buy. Patience is a good element for
Christmas shopping; therefore, shop
around for the best prices.
Although you may have your own
tips or more to add to mine, these are
my personal goals to have a merry and
successful Christmas. You do not have
to follow my guidelines and after reading
this, you may come up with a set of
guidelines of your own.
To everyone, I would like to wish
you a Merry Christmas and also, con
gratulations to all of the graduating
DO WE ENCOURAGE SCHOOL VIOLENCE?
Apostolic auishaOl @vahoo.com
Young people still have not
learned from America’s past catastro
phes. We have all recognized the
reasons why students continue with
school violence, such as school
shootings. This sad epidemic has
migrated from high schools to univer
A reason given why students
commit these crimes is that they were
ridiculed, teased or held as outcast.
Why do students continue to treat
other students in such a manner?
While interviewing students for
this newspaper, a group of girls,
whom I have acknowledged as
friends, immediately took the opportu
nity to laugh at and speak negatively
about me. This was not a shocking
occurrence, but It happened right in
front of me, as I stood before them.
These students had no idea what
type of frame of mind I could have
possessed during the time or what I
had been through earlier that day.
This is sometimes one of the first
acts that causes school violence and
shootings- disregard for another’s
feelings in order to make you look
good. How good does it look to see
so many different schools on the
news that have had fatal occur
After these catastrophes, the
students ask “Why me?” Reflect for a
moment on what you have said or
done to other students. Have you
said something that could have hurt
or belittled them? Did you say or do
something for f/7e/r well-being or your
own? How could you have prevented
The first step in solving the
problem is for each student to be
mindful of others feelings. Next, we
should focus on our schoolwork, our
own problems and ourselves before
we try to pinpoint another person’s
I thank God that I know who He
is and that I can call on Him in my
times of need, but everyone does not
know how to do so. If students do not
want these events to continue, strive
to be student leaders and also offer
encouragement, help, and blessings
as a friend.
