First, an ECSU Viking is a leader! Our mission at ECSU is, essentially, to prepare leaders. Effective, positive lead ership, then, is the dominant characteristic we would expect to find in an ECSU Viking. Leadership is the process of influencing other people to do willingly something that they otherwise would not have done, “...leadership is about taking people to places where they have never dared to go.”^ Yes, our mission at ECSU is to prepare our students to be outstand ing leaders. We know that successful organizations succeed because of good leadership: schools are successful when they have good principals; businesses are successful when they have good Chief Executive Officers; football and basketball teams that win year after year do so, in large part, because they have excellent coaches; armies are successful when they have good generals; governments are successful when they have good presi dents, prime ministers, or monarchs. Leadership makes the difference in organizations, societies, the world. Our aim has been to prepare you for that kind of transformational leadership. And with your cooperation and hard work, we have succeeded! You are now ready to go into the world and be leaders in education, business, science, social science, music, and govern ment. The second thought is this: never give up. The great statesman, Winston Churchill, made the point very effectively in a speech given just ^after the worst the Hitler’s attack’s on England. The British had survived a very dark period in their history when many thought that they were surely doomed to Hitler’s war machine. This is what he said: “But for everyone, surely, what we have gone through in this pe riod ... this is the lesson: never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never in nothing, great or small, large or petty never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.” The enemy might be those who don’t believe that every school child can learn and should be taught well with that expectation, or the govern ment official who is not fairly serving all of her constituents, a biased criminal justice system, or a busihess enterprise that puts profits above people. Whatever enemy you face, the true Viking will never give in. That is the kind of leadership that can change the world, and that is the kind of leadership that you are now prepared to give. Always remember, the ECSU Viking is no common, ordinary, run- of-the-mill sailor. We are proud and courageous, superior strategists and tacticians. We are leaders! Finally, remember always that ECSU is your alma mater. It has contributed to building the foundation upon which you will base the rest of your life. ECSU has given you a college education and with it you have no limits. We will expect you to tell others about your positive experiences at ECSU, to visit us often, to send us good students, and to contribute your money generously so that the students who follow you may have even more opportunities.
