Vikings fall in season opener Shannon Penn Staff Writer The Elizabeth City State Uni versity football team started the 2003 campaign in the wrong direction, by losing to the Benedict College Tigers 18-6 at Roebuck Stadium. After a first quarter that was dominated by defense, the Tigers got on the board first with a 1 -yard touch- down run by fullback Patrick Cumbee. The Tigers would be un successful on the extra point attempt and take a 6-0 lead into the half. The Vikings' defense contin ued its good play in the third, forcing the Tigers to punt on its first two pos sessions of the second half. The Vi kings would capitalize when Teyon Pender returned a Tigers punt 81 yards for the Vikings first touchdown under 1®* year head coach Waverly Tillar. Unfortunately the punt return would be the only time the Vikings would score in the game. The score was tied 6-6 in the fourth when the Tigers defense forced a Donald Norman fumble which was recovered by Tigers defensive back Tony Wil son who ran it in for the score to put the Tigers up for good. With 4:10 re maining, the Tigers would increase their lead when quarterback Calvin Drummond hooked up with Gerald Robinson for a 27-yard touchdown to give the Tigers a commanding 18- 6 lead. Defensively, the Vikings were led by junior safety Howard Williams, NAILS BY JULIE 1502 B EHRINGHAUS ST. Senior linebacker Marcus Hilliard finished with 6 tackles, a pass defended, quarterback hurry, and 2 sacks for a loss of 22 yards. Offen sively, Pender was the Vikings’ only bright spot, finishing with 119 total yards on 4 punt returns. For his great play, Pender was named the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Special Teams Player of the Week. Broncos beat Vikings Shannon Penn Staff Writer The Elizabeth City State Uni versity Vikings lost their third straight game this season by losing to the defending CIAA Champion Fayetteville State University Broncos 13-0 at Luther Jerald Stadium in Fayetteville, NC. As they proved all season the Vikings’ defense played well, hold ing the Broncos to only 17 rushing yards in the first half. FSU kicker Ross McKernan converted two field goals in the first half giving the team a 6-0 lead at the half. The Vikings offense showed signs of life early on in the third quar ter when quarterback Dan Herlihy completed a 47-yard bomb to Teyon Pender who was brought down at the FSU 17-yard line. Unfortunately, pen alties and a good Broncos defense derailed the Vikings momentum and kicker Ken Mihalyov missed a 35- yared field goal attempt that would have cut he Broncos lead in half. On the Vikings next possession, the of- Damion O. Lewis dolewis@sprintpcs.com Staff Writer This past week, the Lady Viking Volleyball team dropped the ball on three separate occasions, first to the Lady Firebirds from the University of the District of Columbia, next to the Lady Bears of Shaw University, end ing with a disappointing loss against the Trojanettes of Virginia State Uni versity. During the first game the Lady Vikings put up a determined fight, only to be swept out 3-0. Highlights of the game included Portia Parker’s serving six consecutive points to a narrow 27-20 point lead in favor of the Firebirds. The Lady Firebirds went on to dominate the match. The Lady Vikings fared no bet ter against the onslaught of the Lady Bears of fellow CIAA competitor, Shaw University. Perhaps not tak ing note on the losses of their first game, the Lady Vikings were held off again, failing to win one of the three matches of the game. What ap peared to be battle on the scoreboard during the second match ended in a massacre during the final match as the Lady Vikings would lose each consecutive match 30-15,30-25, and 30-14. The final game of the week set the Lady Vikings against division ri vals Virginia State. The see-saw battle led many to believe that the Lady Vikings were finally getting se rious. After a loss in the first match, the Lady Vikings caught fire taking a 7 point lead, only to have it crushed after a timeout and regroup by the Trojanettes. Trojanette Alona Marable would go on to lead her team to victory in matches 2 and 3. With 7 kills, 4 digs and an assisted block. The Trojanettes were a force to be reckoned with under Marable’s leadership and went on to victory with game scores of 30-24, 30-16, 30-19. The next game will be Monday September 15, 2003 at 6:30pm as the Lady Vikings host the Lady Ti gers of Saint Paul University. Per haps the Lady Vikings will come out of their slump in victory on Monday night. Falcons soar past Vikings Shannon Penn Staff Writer The Elizabeth City State Uni versity football team dropped its con ference opener to the Saint Augustine’s Falcons 7-0 at Enloe High School in Raleigh, NC. The Viking defense played well and forced Falcons starting quarter back Darrell Nesbitt to leave the game with a broken finger. Back-up quarterback Andre McGlone was ef fective, marching the Falcons down field to score the game’s lone touch down. McGlone completed a 6-yard pass to receiver Jay Chapman 50 seconds into the second quarter. The Vikings defense would settle down after the touchdown and not allow the Falcons to score again. ECSU con tained the Falcons’ offense, holding them to only 50 yards on the ground and 67 yards in the air. The Falcons defense matched the Vikings dominant performance. The one touchdown would prove to be ail the scoring the Falcons’ de fense would need. Saint Augustine’s completely shutdown the Vikings’ passing game not allowing a comple tion and forcing four interceptions. The Vikings had a chance to tie the game late in the fourth until the Falcon's Sintell Crew intercepted a pass on the Falcon 1-yard line to seal the win for Saint Augustine's. Carlos Smith rushed for 87 yards on 10 carries and Calvin Hudgins adding 66 yards on the ground in the losing effort. fense marched down the field to the Broncos 14-yard line. Once again and penalties hurt the Vikings a s they were pushed back to the FSU 27-yard line. Facing 4'*' and 23, Herlihy threw a deep pass into the end zone, but it was picked of by Walt Williams and returned 45 yards. The Vikings never came close again. With a little over 14 minutes left in the game, the Broncos would score the game’s only touchdown when quarterback Duane Taylor completed a 33-yard strike to Barry McCauley that gave the Broncos a 13-0 lead. Howard Williams led ECSU with 11 tackles, and fellow defensive Are you interested in working with The Compass?
