Riding the nnomentum of his
strong play at the end of last season,
Elizabeth City State University senior
guard, Jonathan Harris, was named
to the 2003 All-CIAA Pre-Season
Team.
A relatively complementary
player his first three seasons, Harris
began to show signs last year that he
was ready to step up and be one of
the teams main players. Last season,
he averaged 11.6 PPG and 3.3 RPG,
including scoring a career high 28
points in consecutive games against
North Carolina Central and Virginia
State University.
With the departure of key
players Tyrone Smith and Courtney
Ogelsby Harris was thrust from role
player status, to being the main of
fensive weapon.
“At the end
of last season,
we had evalua
tions with Coach
Walker,” Harris
said. “He told us
how he thought
ouryearwent, and
asked what did
we think we
needed to work
on, and how we
saw ourselves.”
This was
the point in which
Harris began to
realize his impor
tance to the team.
“He asked
me what role did I
see myself with
the team, and I
told him that I’m a
, laid back kind of
guy that would do
anything that the
team needed me
to do. He showed me my stats and
he said, ‘you took this many shots,
you went to the free-throw line so many
times and you averaged almost 12
points per game.’”
In the meeting. Coach Walker
defined Harris’ role and told him what
was expected of him.
“He told me, ‘you’re going to
need to step it up this year because
you are going to be the first option.’
He told me I didn’t have to shoot all
the time like Allen Iverson, but I was
going to have to create for my team
mates,” Harris said.
Being one of the few seniors on
the basketball team, he feels it is his
responsibility to make sure everyone
is on the same page.
“In practice I understand and I
know what Coach Walker is looking
for,” Harris said. “I try to take that and
be first, so I can lead the team and
show them the correct way to do cer
tain plays and drills.”
In addition to being an inexperi
enced team. Coach Shawn Walker
has totally redefined his offensive
scheme; throwing out most if not all
of the plays from last year.
“The transition to the new of
fense is kind of tough,” Harris said.
The people from last year still have a
mind set that certain plays do this and
certain plays do that. Every now and
then someone in practice, including
myself, will run an old play while we’re
running a new one, and it gets con
fusing. Right now we are focusing on
getting the plays down, and we’re
pretty much doing that well.”
Harris and the rest of the Vi
kings are picked to finish 5“" in the
CIAA Eastern Division, and Harris
feels that the team will come together
and exceed all expectations.
“It’s not about where you start;
it’s about where you finish,” Harris
said.

WRVS-89.9 FM Radio Station
Who Is Talbert Grey?
By: Travis Hubbard
Elizabeth City State University
is privileged to receive a man who has
made a major impact on the broad
casting industry as well as the Afri
can American community. Mr. Talbert
Grey has arrived this semester to head
the campus radio and television sta
tions. Along with the usual duties,
he’s come to shine a little more light
in his field and, hopefully, bring
E.C.S.U. to the top.
Grey plans to reenergize the
radio station. He feels that the sta
tion is not recognized, as it should
be. He feels that it is imperative that
E.C.S.U. compete with other stations.
By building up our station now to a
high credibility rate he believes that it
will make it a lot easier for students
in broadcasting to go directly into the
work force fully prepared.
Although Grey's future dreams
and goals are big, the budget how
ever is fairly small. The major aid for
the station comes from Success
Fest. Success Fest is an event in
which listeners call in and offer a do
nation. Various prizes may be re
ceived for various amounts donated.
Grey receives a tremendous amount
of support from co-workers D.L.
Underdue (radio), Melba Brown (TV)
and many others. Grey is determined
to make a change at E.C.S.U. for the
better.
